I know a guy that uses one he's got, but just for finding depth and setting his tipups. I still have an old Humminbird Wide portable that would work in the same fashion as those do. You really don't get a true read of the bottom, type of bottom, or sensitivity you really need for good ice fishing use...especially for targeting panfish. That's what lead me to my Vex. Not only that, but any of the portables that don't run on gel cells go thru batteries like they're free.
Now if you're going to use it in summer or you own a jon boat or canoe and may use it elsewhere....I'd say go for it. What's $60? But you said you planned on hard water only....I'd save for another option....imo.
I would step up to the 2200 series for $20 more also...more pixels=better picture.
