Default 1st time saltwater flyfishing @ Ediso Island, SC

My stepson got back from Iraq a few weeks ago and got to come home so we packed up the canoe and headed to Edisto Island, SC. Beautiful weather and once we got on the water the dolphins were surfacing around us in the tidal creeks. We found feeding fish all day but unfortunately nothing would take any fly we had till late in the day. I finally got our first of 2 fish, a 14 1/4" flounder on a merkin crab. I also took the second, another flounder a few minutes later, 13 3/4", under the limit so it went back.

We had a pretty good time without catching the fish. The slightly overcast sky and nice temp gave us a false sense of security though and we both looked like lobsters at the end of the day. Chris had never seen a dolphin so close up before so he enjoyed that, and being away from the Army for a while. We both enjoyed being on the water. It definitely got me wanting to fish more now. We'll see if I can get the wife to buy off on a kayak soon. I already snuck in a new Winston Vapor 9wt. and a Lamson Velocity for the trip so it might have to wait.

I'm taking my Dad and a friend next week with a guide out of Mt. Pleasant, SC for some reds and trout. The forecast calls for rain and maybe chilly temps but hopefully it changes by then. If not, a few nice fish would more than make up for it.

If you want to catch fish, stay away from the dolphin. They may seem cool, but they are a fishermans biggest enemy. A pack of them can wipe out a school of fish in no time, and will even kill a school of fish and leave them. Doesn't matter how good the fish are biting, once the dolphin move in, your luck takes a steep dive. Glad you had fun though, I don't fly fish but I know a few guides that do, its always seemed interesting and fun, but casting over and over and over all day...just can't talk myself into it.
