Did you all hear about the 48 lb. rainbow?
No,this isn't a joke. I saw on another site where a geneticly produced rainbow trout was caught in a lake after the fish was released. I cannot see how a fish that can't reproduce be fit to be caught. No thanks,I like my trout naturaly produced by other trouts, not a labatory.Even if it means catching 1 -2 lb. rainbows.

Re: Did you all hear about the 48 lb. rainbow?
It's a triploid. Triploids are not genetically-modified. They are mechanically-modified,either through heating the embryo or giving the equivalent of a vascectomy to the fry.
These fish cannot breed, and are introduced to provide "catchables" with the natural stocks unaltered and relatively underfished.
The young fellow and his brother are guides, and since they were +/- age 16 have been guiding for these fish which were accidentally intro'd into this impoundment.
Except for their created sterility, they are in every respect a natural fish.
Triploids are widely planted. In fact, on the westrern slope lakes of the Canadian Rockies, you can also catch 7# brookies, which are not natives. That's a pretty good brookie.
See STS magazine, Winter 2008/9

You should go to Field and Stream, and find the new record Brown Trout. It was like 41lbs.

That isn't far from the old record that was caught here in Arkansas. I'm just saying,a 41 lb.brown is truely a big and once in a lifetime fish, and a natural one at that. But a 48 lb. rainbow surpasses the previous record like 25 lbs.isn't likey a "natural" fish.

Re: Did you all hear about the 48 lb. rainbow?
KATMAN, the sterility of the fish is induced. The fish is not otherwise "unnatural". The size comes from their not breeding. The breeding can reduce the size a fish grows to. All consumed energy goes into building the "beef".
But those big browns, aside from their being cross-bred to induce the more aggressive and bigger traits are otherwise completely natural too.
Sort of like Florida LM bass intro'd into private California & Texas ponds and being shotgun-fed pellets and having their pond stocked with bait will create the new (legitimate???) world record LM bass.
I'd love to have it on my line. But, were I IFGA, would I accept it as a record?
Were this to develope into a debate, it could be debated whether any stocked or transplanted fish is natural.
Cheers!

Having caught a pile of rainbows I will say this. They are a blast to catch and very good eating. A beautiful fish also. Yes, they are all stockies but who cares. I would rather see rainbows then no fish at all.......

So true. The AF&G stocks local small lakes around here every winter with rainbows. Catching one at the Beaver lake tailwaters is fun because the rainbows there spawn and reproduce in the cold waters.I caught a couple at Lake Atlanta (in Rogers,Arkansas)and it was like reeling in a stick,no fight what so ever. And this on ultra lite rod and reels.
