Talking Re: One more question about wildcats

Dear Jesse
Regarding the use of Cream of Wheat when fireforming. DO NOT try to make this a double duty thing, no matter how frugal you may be. Trying to make your breakfast with this method from any distance is highly improbable, Cream of wheat is very suseptable to wind drift, on the other hand, fire forming directly into a bowl WILL result in Srapnel!

Here is a picture. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_forming The case on the right is the parent case, the case in the center is after being run through a sizing die on a reloading press, and the case on the left is the finished product after fire forming. Sizing the case in a die helps to form the case a little at a time, then using fire forming to finish, as the parent case would not fit into the chamber to fire form the case all at once.

The finished case, a .284 Achilles, would be an example of a rebated rim wildcat. The rebated rim part means the rim of the case is smaller than the case body. The .300 Ultra Mag is a rebated case also, where as the .30-06/.308 family of cases are not rebated rim.

Here are some cartridge pics of the fireforming I am currently doing. I am using .30-06 to form .338-06 Ackley Improved.

I am necking up new .30-06 brass (brass on the left in the pics) using a sizing die with a tapered expander to get the .338-06 brass (middle brass in the pics). Then I load that brass using published load data and fire it in my .338-06 AI rifle. The resulting brass is fireformed .338-06 AI (brass on the right).
