I am looking to buy a rifle for deer hunting and found a Browning A-Bolt in7mm Mag for a great price.
Is this a suitable caliber for deer and if things work out, antelope in Wyoming? The only rifle I've owned is
a 22-250 for varmints, so this is new to me.

I have a 7mm rem mag . I think it should be a good choice for what you have listed . I have taken two caribou and a cow elk with it . so deer and antelope should be no problem . Jim

Great caliber choice for the game you mentioned, even better choice on the make and model of the gun!

I am not a browning guy so no comment there but I think caliber is a good choice. and if the deal is right go for it. However For what you mentioned I would opt more for a 270 wsm as there is a better selection of bullets for the game mentioned in my opinion.

I own both 7 mag and 270 wsm the 7 mag the lightest you can go is 139 for the most part unless you handload. Which is fine but

the 270 wsm you can now get in a 110 gr triple chok which would be great for lopes up to 150 gr which arent ballistically much differebt than equal out of a 7 mag.

Another thing is I really like to just shoot my guns even if its just cutting paper and the 7 mag will kill your shoulder. My wsm is a pleasure to shoot. And both guns are basically the same bith model 700 with laminate stock.

Again if it is a good deal and it would cost more than 100 to get a new gun of choice than get it. but if you are onlly saving a few dollars get what you want.

The 7 mag is a big step up from the 22-250. Have you ever shot this type of cartridge? As noted by another person, the 7 Mag has pretty significant recoil - especially compared to a 22-250, which has virtually none. The 7 mag is also a bit much for deer and antelope. Nothing wrong with it, for sure, but you could certainly get by with a milder cartridge for these quarry.

If you've already bought the rifle, then you should look at getting a good recoil pad (Limbsaver, etc). If you haven't already bought it, you might want to look at rifles chambered in milder cartridges such as 270 or 7mm-08. Either one of these will be more than adequate for deer and antelope, and will be much easier to shoot well.

Good luck in whatever choice you make!

i own a 7mm RM, savage 110e... older model, always liked the Browning guns, both shotguns and rifles.
7mm RM is a great caliber... it is taxing on the shoulder if punching paper... and you would need to do that to get good at it for hunting... but I do love my gun... plus when hunting I never feel recoil
Deer have not complained about it, since they were VERY dead, I will try it this year on antelope and cow elk, but as said before 139gr is pretty much as low as you can go on bullet weights.
If the price is right take, it will serve you well, if you find something better (might be difficult!!) suited for you take it... 7mm Rem Mag will allow you to take any game in NA, except for the big bad bears, has a very straight trajectory and reaches out and hits em hard at all the appropiate hunting distances.

Good choice and you cant go wrong, but I agree that there are many other good choices for deer and speedgoats, plus cheaper and tamer ammo.
congrats

A good gun is one that you can carry all day for the kind of hunting you do, shoot accurately, and has sufficient killing power.

The 7mm mag is a good cartridge, but it's a lot of rifle for deer. Many hunters are more recoil sensitive than they admit, and don't shoot a magnum well (watch them flinch while shooting at the range). Others can shoot a 300 Win Mag off the bench and hold tight groups all day. Talk with other rifle owners, and try out a few "big guns" before you decide.

And know that you do not need a "magnum." The little 243 Win is a fine deer & antelope cartridge, and a pleasure to shoot. Ditto the good old 270 Win, which also has plenty of power for elk.

Good hunting.

very good pick. The 7mm Rem mag is a excellent choice for a combo of deer and antalope

It is a little Heavy for me. I have never personally owned one but shot many of times with one. If I'm not mistaken it is a little larger than the .30-06 and less than a .300 if that gives you a size refrence. It will be plenty of rifle for deer and antelope *** well as a vast amount of other larger game.
