I am going to buy a .17 HMR for coyote hunting. I would like some suggestions on what brand I should buy. Is it worth it to buy a used one over a new one.

People say that a 17 HMR will work for coyotes but if you are buying a gun FOR coyotes you would be alot better off with a .223 Rem.

I'm with Hunter1992 on this. A coyote isn't that big, but they sure are tough. If you are just looking to hurt them, I guess the .17 will do that, but it's not a caliber that will fold them right up.

I know people say head shots with the rimfires work, and they do, but I just don't seem to see coyotes standing still. They are always running, or moving. They are a very nervous critter, maybe because everyone shoots at them.

Personally I'd look at one of the .22 centerfires, there are a bunch of different ones available, and pick something from that lot.

Im with Mark and Hunter 1992 a 17HMR is a poor choice for coyotes you need a 22 cal. centerfire my suggestion would be a 22-250

totaly agree with mark and rick, 17 is apoor choice for that critter. i have a 17 i use it alot great for all
your small game , plinking and that sort of stuff . but a songdog no good go to something bigger like
the other guys said . here some cals 220 swift , 223, 22-250, 204, 6mm, these are great for what u
want to do, if your looking to save the hide . i use a 270 savage model 110 i pretty much use it for
everything i hunt down here, im not out for the hides there thick out here. also carry a 12 gauge semi
for when they get close . well kiddo have fun be safe your gonna like coyote hunt'n!

Since purchasing a 17HMR I have killed 4 coyotes with it and have discovered that not really up to the job. If the shot is anywhere other then the brain the animal won't die right away and you will have shoot it additional times. It’s simply not powerful enough to produce clean kills. I even tried it on a pig we butchered last January. From 10 feet I shot directly into the brain but the hog didn't die and I had to shoot it again to kill it. Seriously a 22LR appears to be more effective on larger varmints than the 17HMR.

Another plus to the .223 would be cheap ammo.

As for new/used... it's up to you. If budget is an issue, look at a NEF single shot. Otherwise, I'd look a decent bolt-action. Just about every gun manufacturer has a varmit rifle.

.17 hrm is too small to humanely kill coyotes time after time. i have a 223 wssm and it stops them in their tracks most of the time.

.17 hmr for coyote hunting? If you're gonna buy something for coyote hunting buy .243 or if you don't already have one. .17 hmr bullets are way too expensive. Just use whatever highpowered rifle you have laying around the house.
