Start with your state regs and find out what's legal then go from there.

A little more info will help. What state and what type of loader do they allow? In-line or flintlock or cap and ball. What distance do you shoot? And What do you already know about this type of hunting?

We will be glad to share our knowledge.

as airbourne stated, also find a good local shrink in area as it is addicting

As the others have suggested, begin with your state laws as s source for your introduction. The standard seems to lean towards the modern 209 primer system. I shoot an Encore and love it. I recently added a centerfire barrel to it's abilities and am more than pleased with it. It is a gun with alot of directions you can go with it, however, it costs a little more than others, but in my view is well worth it. Good luck.

I am one of the more traditional shooters. I have a Dixie Tennessee Mountain Rifle flintlock in 50 cal. Rifling is designed for patch and round ball. Not exactly a brush gun. It has a 42" barrel and is about 60" long. Sure is fun to shoot!

If you want to shoot patch and round ball, I recommend you go with the 54 cal.

to new to market for me to take chance on. to each his own but theres just something i don`t like about dropping gun powder and ramming bullet down barrel that ignites by electric (has a circuit board).

Electric spark and rain...ummm not for me. I only hunt the flintlock season. I do archery during the in-line. You haven't told us what state your going to hunt in and what their regs say you can use.

It's going to all go back to what your state regs. are regarding the smokepole season. Some state don't allow in-lines others do. Some allow scopes others don't. Some don't allow sabots others do. Check what your local regs call for then start from there.

As for the Electra....

Personally, I wouldn't want one, and I'm willing to be that a profound number of states aren't going to allow the use of such a muzzleloader.

ill be hunting in northern Wisconsin the only main regulations that i saw is no scopes and the caliber must be over .40 for smoothbore and .45 for a rifled barrel, and there must be a solid threaded breech plug?, inlines are legal

my personal preference in caliber wouldn`t be anything under 50cal. for deer. what type of terrain do you hunt? do you have experience with any type b/p muzzleloader(i.e. flintlock, caplock, inline, etc)? if not do you have access to shoot any of these? if i were just starting out, with the assortment of style`s of m/l`s there are today, i would try to shoot and CLEAN one of each and decide what style suited me best. the flints and caplocks tend to take alittle more maintenance than the inline`s. to me that`s just part of the enjoyment of m/l shooting but its not for everyone. Inlines seem to clean up faster using some of b/p substitutes and have further range when deerhunting. by the way WELCOME TO M/L SHOOTING. ENJOY

I have a 45 cal and really like it, the ballistics are actually considerably better than a .50, however that being said, If I was going to buy a new one it would be a .50 just because of the availability of slugs and powder.

As for guns, TC makes great rifles, as does knight and CV. I have an Austin and Halleck which have been discontinued, but at one time were really great rifles.

My next one is going to be a TC probably with the short 20" barrel, I think it would make a great little woods gun.
