View Full Version : Winchester Apex 209 Magnum
Doea anyone know if the action (trigger assembly/breech) is suppose to have any play in it
when locked in the fire position? Just picked up an Apex in .45 cal. and it just does not seem right
that there should be any movement going on when locked in fire position.

My apex in 50 cal was tight with a real light trigger pull. No play in the breach area and almost no creep in the trigger. Doesn't sound right to me.

I got a 50 cal apex and just checked it and there is no play when locked up.Very accurate rifle ! Only thing I do not like is that it is designed for right hand shooters and I am left handed . But I do have two sons that shoot right hand.

Thank's for the info...I had a buddy post the original question for me. I've since removed the stock
and found a set screw (not unlike a trigger adj. screw) and tweaked it to take up the slack. It locks up
tight now.....It must have not been set right @ the factory?
Thanks again,

Funny...I had the same experience with an Apex that I bought right after Christmas. I was almost ready to mail it back to Cabela's when I decided to take it apart. I don't expect the world of a gun that I only paid $180 for, but it does seem odd that the trigger/breech fit was so sloppy - almost dangerous.
Does anyone know if the Apex 209 is essentially a CVA Kodiak? I know the Apex is made by CVA (or BPI, the parent company to CVA). There are a lot of posts about the CVA Kodiak failing to fire and I think that a loose mechanism could definitely cause that.

This is the first I heard about the CVA Kodiak failing to fire.I just bought one on clearance for $99 ,I thought that was a pretty good deal, now I am wandering?
I could be wrong but if I remember correctly, the Winchester Apex was made by CVA for Winchester. If you look at them closely there doesn't appear to be a nickel's worth of difference. I picked one up a couple of years ago for $200 and thought it was a bargain but it seems like everyone is buying them for less than that nowadays. I also have a 209X50 and I just can't bring myself to take the Kodiak out when it means leaving the Encore at home. I've only shot it a couple of times.

My Apex would not fire a 209 primer when the action was loose. Although it seemed to fire o'kay after
the action was tightened up there doesn't seem to be much room for error. The hammer appears to just
barely kiss the firing pin. It wasn't too lose to begin with and only took a quarter turn of the set screw
to lock it up tight. There seems to be a fine line between positive ignition and misfires with this setup?
