I just saw an article by Randy Wakeman on Chuck Hawk's website about Western Powder's new Blackhorn 209 powder. Sounds very promising. Not necessary to swab between shots. It is only for 209 ignition. If you Google Western Powder Blackhorn 209, you'll also find another article on it.

Time will tell how good the powder is, remember the old saying "never heard a huckester cry rotten fish".

I know several writers for gun magazines that will write a wonderful story about "Jo Blows" new pistol. Then read a dozen complaints about what junk it is later. Finally find out that the writer got to keep the test gun for a good report and we end up with the real story of how good the item wasn't.

Scrat isn't that the truth "tooo much powder". With the local laws any more, fire codes, etc. we have to be careful. Have a friend that had a small garage fire, fire department came put the fire out but found to

he had (10) lbs. of Goex in a powder magazine. He got fined for that, then here comes his home owners insurance - they cancel his policy for having explosives. Local law stated a home owner can only have (1) lb. and a partical of another on property, that really sucks.

On the subject, wait for other reports on the powder, who knows who got who to write the first couple. Always another side to the story these days!

in my area we can have up to 20lbs of smokeless and 5lbs of black. Well my wife wont let me have more than 10lbs of anything. So in this case my wife is higher than the law. I just finished off two lbs of black powder today. So at the range i bought 2 more lbs of black.

What can i say i have to keep the wife happy too. Other than black powder. i have just about 8 bottles of smokeless powder for my rifles and hand guns. So i will wait read the reviews and all the other hoopla on the new powder.

New powder heck the chinese have been making the same stuff for what 1000 years now. So is this new powder supposed to be the NITROUS OXIDE DRAG RACING VERSION.

BlackHorn 209 sounds promising but has to be ignited with a 209 primer. Caps won't do the job. The second drawback was sensitivity to ramrod pressure consistency in terms of accuracy/velocity. In spite of these drawbacks, the testers still acheived some great groups. What aets this powder apart from the other subs is less residue, NO CRUD RING, and less hygroscopic tendencies. Of course, the public has not been subjected to this product yet and we won't REALLY know how good or bad it is until we see the reports from the average Joe!

Well I had a chance to try the blackhorn 209 in my T/C Encore with .444gr copper powerbelt flat points.Absolutely incredible is the only thing I can say,I shot 25 rounds with never before seen accuracy(for me).I had an 1.5 inch group at 100 yards with 20 rounds,I ended up having a 1.5in hole when I was done.Every round loaded just like the first with no flyers once I found the correct amount of powder for my rifle and load.I ended up with 70gr. Im glad to get rid of that 777 and its crud ring.

I bought 3, 10oz containers from Midway. I shot some in my Knight with the Hornaday SST sabots. I am totally pleased with it. Last year I used Pyrodex, & do have some 777, but now it's Blackhorn 209 for me.

Rooster, I'm not a salesperson but; While I try to be frugal the price of 209 is not that bad. I had my M-L sighted in with 5-6 shots. I started off with 80 grns & some old sabots to get it close. Then moved to 100grns. I will do a final tune before the hunt. If I just want some "range time" with my M-L I will shoot Pyrodex or 777.

Yep ,for hunting ,the price would not be to bad , but I shoot 40 -50 shots per week at the range thru my rifles .I bought several pounds of Pyrodex and triple 7 on a clearance sale last spring for less than half price and will be using this for the range time.
May give the new powder a try.
