Thought this would be a good thread as we all have our ol faithful hunting vehicle. Lets hear about them and any stories that go along with them.

I have to say mine is less than ideal. To start it is a 2 wheel drive. It is low to the ground. It runs on 4 cylinders. Wow. How in the world do I ever make it in the area that I live in? It is a 92 Toyota pickup. But it has special meaning to me. Given to me by my father-in-law when the wife and I got hitched. It would be nice to have a different huntin' rig but I will be sad to lose my ol' faithful. I have never had any major repairs to do. And it has been down some roads that it was surely not designed to go on.
Besides who wants a new truck when there are more rifles out there.

I have two of them, first one is the stereotypical hunting rig. It is a 2000 Chevy 4x4 3500 Crew Cab with the full 8' box. It is a little under powered with the 5.7L/350CI engine but it gets me by. I have helped its performance some with a few mods and a SuperChip computer module. This is the most frequently taken vehicle as it has a lot of room and can seat 4 adults plus gear comfortably.
My other hunting vehicle is a 1998 Ford Taurus station wagon. This is my bird hunting rig, I have kennel space for four dogs in the back, seating for a driver and passenger, and space for a medium sized cooler and other gear. As I get nearly 30 mpg with this I find it much better to take when I don't need much space to haul game home. On extended trips I'll toss a luggage carrier on the top but that is not common. It is also my daily driver.

Until about a week ago it used to be my F250 7.3L Powerstroke with extended cab and 8 foot bed. I might as well have had a train. It was hard to find places to park without blocking the whole road. I kept it but bought a 93 Wrangler. I forgot how much fun short can be. I got a hitch added for the deer carrier and Man what a blast.

'97 Jeep Wrangler Sahara w/softop, lift, 33's, locker, full flow cat and exhaust. All I do is drive it out where I knocked the buck down, put the tow strap around it's neck, drag it to the place we put the gut piles.....then to the house. If I hunted anywhere but here I'd have me one of those outboard platforms that plug into the receiver hitch.

Well my vehicles definetly arent as nice as the ones listed but I wouldnt trade them for the world. For about 10 yrs my everyday driver and hunting vehicle was a 1990 Chevy 1500 2wd. This truck has gone places it was never intended to and it showed. Last year when I decided to bring her back to life there wasnt a 1/4 panel on her that wasnt dented or scratched. I replaced front passenger side fender both doors ,rear panel and the tailgate had it painted and put a new motor, tranny and rear end under her. I then began to add extras such as flowmasters, tinted windows and new tires. She looks like a million bucks now and she still hauls deer out for me and my family. She just doesnt go places that can hurt her now.
My other truck is my beater now,it is a 1982 F150 long bed, I installed "custom"...lol benches in the back to haul clients. There is no heat, air or radio in her. The wiper and light knobs are made from deer bases and my "custom" cup holder is a Cambellss soup can screwed to the floor. It doesnt have a tailgate as it literally fell off a few months ago. There is two bullet holes in the passenger door ...one went into the seat and the other came to rest in the dash. This is a long story trust me. It just adds character to it I think. Oh yeah and if you get bored while you are driving it you can just move the drivers side mat and watch the road go by through the 8" hole in the floor compliments of a red oak log in my way.
I am going to learn how to send photos so yall can see this beauty. She uses as much oil as gas (ford) but she starts when I turn the ignition and takes me where I want to go.

This will be my first season back in the woods in a long time, and it will also be the first trip my 2006 Jeep Commander will take. Full time AWD system takes this thing all over the place with ease. Driving through open fields is the most it's seen so far. I can't wait to see it bog down in some mud, get put in 4 Low, and pull it's self out! They are big, bad, and fun to drive.

I mostly hunt deer on my own place, so the vehicle of choice is a 1967 John Deere 3020 Diesel with a front end loader! After gutting, I drag to a place I can get the tractor to. The rest is easy! We don't work up our own deer anymore, so I place (via the front end loader) the deer on our Ford F350 flatbed and off we go the the processer.

double a , what engine is in the toyota ? automatic or standard ? has it been a good truck ? what MPG does it get ? I'm looking to get a Tacoma and I can't find anyone locally that I know that has a newer one . my neighbor has a 1994 with about 240,000 miles and it is trouble free . I'm a mechanic and I do very little toyota repairs . from what I see they are top notch . thanks Jim

Jim,my Tacoma has the 4.0 liter V-6 with 5 speed automatic transmission. On average I get 20 MPG , which isnt great but considering 4 wheel drive and typcial highway speeds of 70-75 mph dont help any. The tires are rotated and oil is changed regularly. So far with 30K miles on it, there have been zero problems. One thing to be aware of though it that if you pull any kind of trailer with it the milegae drops considerably.

Depends on the hunting. I use my either my 6.7 cummins megacab with 6" lift and 37" tires or my 74' Ford Bronco to get into the wild stuff running 35" tires 6" James Duff lift and front and rear lockers.

I talked to buddy of mine who has the V-6 and he said to go with a standard transmission. He said that you dont have to worry about the tranny overheating when you get a lot of mud on it or when the radiator gets a dose. He said it pulls better than the auto too. In low gear it is easier to control the speed and torque.

My Jeep has a standard tranny and I agree on the ability to better control your speed over really rough terrain.

Just his opinion

'01 Tacoma Xtra Cab with 4" lift. They are top notch Jim, I could've paid less for a Ford Ranger, S-10 or other midsize when I bought mine about 3 years ago, but by now I'd be looking for a new truck again. I've got 130,000 on mine and no problems. In my opinion they are more than worth the extra money. I haven't experienced much with the new ones, but I'm sure you won't be disappointed if you choose a Tacoma.

Well Matt, we got more in common than we thought. I have an White '07 Tacoma, Extra Cab, TRD Sport. Fully loaded, every bell and whistle on it that Toyota Offered that year. Got it in October, so no new toys to add. However, I'm taking off the factory tires since they are junk and putting on a set of Cooper Discoverer STT's. Email me pics if you got some. Here's Les' truck, its an '06. Only differnce is all the toys he has and mine has the long box. Which really ain't long becuas its only 6 ft. I will get some pictures to ya some time,

My best hunting truck was a 1990 2dr 4wd full size Ford Bronco with large tires, a go anywhere do anything don't care type vehicle.

My new one is less rugged, it's a 2000 GMC Yukon. I sleep in the back about 10 days a year, while hunting, it has a lot more space for gear and towes better. But it ain't no Bronko

Old reliable is a '72 LandRover still going strong. You have to cut elk in half to fit them in the back, though. Two elk are near impossible unless your buddy rides slung over the hood. It'll climb any face on Mt Rushmore though. Not much of a heater. On a long drive back from the Gallatin Range (near Yellowstone), the weather turned cold, went to -30 deg F, my buddy and I were wrapped in wool blankets. When we got to Butte, I had to pry him out--his coat was froze solid to the door.

The little '91 Toy P.Up is perfect. High gas mileage, gets around tight turns on Forest Circus roads, plenty of clearance for rocks and mudholes, superb traction in 4WD (studs plus I carry chains for all 4, and a come-along just in case), adequate torque in low range, and plenty of room in the bed for two elk and two deer all at once (that was a good day). AND one **** of a heater!

If I hunted with more than one partner (which would be at least two partners too many), I'd have to have a bigger rig.

I have a couple that I use. When the weather is nicer I use my 1943 Willis MB Jeep. It is all G.I. so it only has the canvas top, no sides. Other wise I use my 1986.5 Nissan Kingcab 4x4. I bought the truck new when I came back from overseas. It had 4 miles on it when I drove it off the lot, it now has 250,000+ on it and still going. The paint peeled off of it so I went to Walmart and got some Crylon flat camo paint and painted it. that truck has gone everywhere I have ever tried to take it. I plan on keeping it until the wheels fall off.....

fav was my 76 land cruiser -with chains if you can't get there you shouldn't be there-having carb trouble on old rust bucket-took the 2005 dodge 1500 4 wd. this year the hemi is good-auto lets you ease around -the power is there-of course like all dodges the metal on body is very dentable . was in lots of mud forst day-the adobe clay won't wash off. love my armorthane bed too.

For the last 10 plus years, I have been using a 1980 Chevy 4X4, regular cab, long box. It has a 4 iinch lift kit with some BF Goodrich Mud Terrain tires. The ol'girl is a tank of a truck but runs like a top and has never let me down.

Best hunting rig I had was a '87 F-150, had the 4.9L straight 6 with a 4-speed manual, great engine and tranny combo, had so much low end torque that it was unstoppable, well at least I was never stopped in it!! Every year I came home with a new "souvenir" someplace on it, never minded as it was just a reminder of another great trip!! Family grew so I had to get something with more room, now my current truck is a '97 F-150 with an extended cab, so far has not let me down, both are a little big for the trails I take them on, but I guess that just adds to the fun!! Put chains on all fours and it really is amazing the "roads" you can cover... Here's a picture of my old truck, it never was pretty, but it sure could go places!!

Actually I have 2, #1 2001 Chev E-Cab swb 6.0 5-sp manual. #2 is an '87 Jeep Cherokee inline 6 & obligatory 5-sp manual. The truck now mostly does the hunting chores now but the Cherokee is our prairie dog rig. I can take 3 others with me and everybody has a window. Last night my son got his second deer this season right here on Main St. The radiator is at the radiator shop and a new grille has been ordered.

No, I read in a car magazine that the "rich" tend to buy white cars when they want to show off their weatl. Don't know how true it is, but I bought it because it doesn't show dirt like black and red and silver and that funky looking blue color I like to call "josh's". ****!

No really though, my truck can be covered in filth, but it still looks clean. Up close you can tell its got dirt on it, but for a far, looks clean as a whistle. Too each his own!

I do not know about white being a rich color but it is a fantastic color. Nothing better than getting mud all it and then parking it in the driveway so that all of the neighbors can know just what I did last weekend. It is also a good way to get the wife mad so I'm all for it. chs

My hunting rig is a 2007 Ford Ranger 4wd regular cab with a 3.0 V6 automatice trans. it gets me everywhere I need, it;s a Ford and it gets good gas mileage. Most of the time it's my dad and I with my dog box in the back of the truck (weighs 250 lbs without dogs) or it;s just me in the truck with 2-3 dogs. Wife likes driving this one compared to my last one.

This past November was the last year for my 2002 GMC Sierra Extended cab with the 5.3 Vortec. "Pewter" I think was the color they called it. The "Red Tag Event" was too good to pass up this last time around and I have myself in a new GMC Sierra Crew Cab in bright red with the 4.8. Lost a little room in the bed and a wee bit of power, but still plenty for the dog, the guns, and whatever else will fit. More room inside than I know what to do with. Problem is now I'm a little timid to drive it on the hard water ice fishing or scoot thru the woods and scrape it up....but that's what we do with 'em right?

I am going to learn how to send photos so yall can see this beauty. She uses as much oil as gas (ford) but she starts when I turn the ignition and takes me where I want to go.

I think you should start a new thread on those bullet hole's in th door. I have a few of those story's.

I have a Ford Ranger Fx4 level II as my daily driver and "get to the lease" truck. I HAD a 53 willys jeep that I semi-restored. I bought an atric top and windshield in New Mexico and hauled it back and installed it. It was at our least for four years before I took it to the shop and rebuilt the transmission and transfer case. I did a complete re-wire job on it and added a radio. Took it out to the lease for a maiden voyage and it passed with flying colors. Parked it next to the cabin in case of a fire (we had a 125 foot fire break in all directions around the cabin. Seven days later it got roasted and toasted. Hot enough to melt the aluminum top which if i remember my welding class is about 1500 degrees. It is still out there, setting where it cooked. Sometimes I think about draging it in and salvaging what I can but I just don't have the heart to work on it again.

I am working on an 88 F150 superduty 4wd. I have the frame and transmission. I need a body and a long block plus a radiator and new brake tubes and master cylinders. It will be my hunting truck when it is finished. I also have a 69 ranger that was my first truck. I have thought of moving the body from it to the 88 frame but I haven't taken measurements so I don't know if it will fit. Plus I could probably sell it for $ as they are becoming popular.

I've got a 2000 Chevy S-10 2WD 4 cylinder. Maybe not the best of road vehicle, but when hunting, I just need it to pull off the road into a gravel parking space, if we get a foot or more of snow, I have a little trouble getting out, but I've never gotten stuck out there.
The truck has also seen it's share of off-roading, I've had it almost up to the frame in mud and it made it through fine; tried the same hole later and did get stuck though.

I'm putting in an outdoor furnace and I've been hauling supplies for that . I've had 33 bags of quikrete (cement ) 80 pounds each on it . all I can say is the truck seems good . my truck has the 4.0 V-6 I think it's 235 HP.

I pull a trailer and lawn equipment on a daily basis. Only about 2000 lb......but I pull a tractor every now and then that weighs over 6000 lb..... also I want to get a full size camper when the truck is paid off, probably a fifth wheel...It makes it easier towing thru the mountains.

I am also one of those Pround Toyota owners. Mine is an 06 access cab, 4.0 6speed manual, sport pkg. Also in the great color of White. Has three inch lift and BF goodrich mud terrain ta tires. The pku will go anywhere. My mileage isn't as good as Adams or some of the others. I average around 18. I have got over twenty twice. During winter and hunting seasons im down around 14-16. But all that is dirt roads or pastures in four wheel drive. Is just goin on 18000 miles, but is two years old. It has been the best vehicle ive ever owned. Perfect for two of us, is sucks for three.

I have a 2003 ZR2 s10 blazer. It's got 32" bfg mud tires, an extra 2" of lift, I replaced the unreliable automatic transfer case with a manual one, a rear locker for better traction, a 600lb warn winch, and a search light. It's a love hate thing. Offroad on typical ugly logging trails you don't even need to put in 4wd. However, the thing eats through front suspension parts, the trannies rarely live over 100k due to a valvebody failures. Offroading is my other hobby. Converting it to a solid front axle soon with another 5" or so extra lift. No kit here, just my grinder and welder and some jeep wagoneer axles.

If you wheel you truck, Lockers are worth every penny. My truck in 2wd does just as good as a stock truck in 4wd in the mud.

I'll chime in with the 3rd Land Rover. 1995 Range Rover Classic SWB (http://picasaweb.google.com/jtreider/DropBox?authkey=LXp3ivX6sIY#5280899351480295970). It's great off road and perfect for hauling Whitetails (one at a time on the hitch and haul). I use the Hitch and Haul ATV version, the offset tongue improves on the ridiculous departure angle of the regular carriers... and at around $50 from Cabelas it can't be beat.

EcoRover: Is your Series an 88 or 109? SW or P/U? I'd love to get a Series, but I can only afford to maintain one Rover right now and, as you pointed out, it's nice to have heat.

sailinghudson25
12-23-2008, 03:14 AM
Rovers are about the best thing to offroad in out of the box. I put some decent work into my truck to get it in the ball park. I am amazed what those things can do in stock form when I go offroading in popular spots.

Wish I could afford to keep a rover going. Used to work as a foreign car mechanic. Those suckers add up a bill though.

It also put out over 450 ft/lbs of torque from 1200-6200 rpm. I also added 8 inchs of lift 37.5 in TSL's tires. and at least 6in of articulation. I also added a sportz truck tent III, and a truckbedz bed (both avalible @ cabela's). So me and my son can drive onto the sandbar @ the river and go fishing/camping/hunting etc.
