I went bear hunting early this morning. When I arrived at the trailhead I was getting my gear lined out (keep in mind this is above tree line, blueberries everywhere, and theres still some snow), when a subaru pulled up and out of the car came to full blown tree huggers, I mean fanny paks and all, Im not sure what to think I never really seen this in my home state (wyoming) so I said hello. Then the one fellow asked me what I was hunting for, and I told him, then it started, they both promised me there where no bears up here, so finally I just walked off, ten minutes up the trail I spot a pig of a bear feeding in some berry patches on the other side of the canyon, so I decide to watch him, and see where he goes and first thing tommorow ill go sit over there and wait, the canyon was very far across and very deep with thick blow downs. So maybe a half hour goes by and can here very loud voices and cow bells, it was the tree huggers. How stupid I thought. O well I just let them go by. That just lets you guys know how washington really sucks. I really miss wyoming right now. 9 months to go.

You did the right thing and that was walk away. That must have been very hard. Maybe they were ringing a dinner bell for bears. When you see them running by you, reach out and hand them a bullet and a rock, to shoot it with.

trapper,

You mean to tell me that those tree hugging do-gooders were driving a gas guzzling suburban? What kind of self respecting envioromentalist is not driving a hybrid? You should have done them a favor and put an end to that nasty combustion engine while they were out destroying the solitude. Let them walk out of that wilderness with the comfort that they are doing the bears a favor. I'm sure the bears will agree. What a bunch of hypocrites. Better, get their lisence plates and file charges. Allowing them to just walk off means that they will do the same to the next poor hunter and that guy might not be so understanding and you and I.

Now you know why I hunt private land. My temperment does not lend itself to having as much "understanding" as you. Last year our outfitter hired an enviormentalist for the cook. Guess what she drove. A 20 year old Dodge one ton pick up with the big gas engine which got 8 miles to the gallon. Want to know how I know how many miles to the gallon she got? She ran out of gas on the way up the mountain and had to be rescued. They mean well, its just that they are missing the common sense chromosome.

ps. My apologies to all the fine do gooding tree hugging animal rights people for the suburban mix up. Thanks dubby.

Actually, CS, he said Subaru, not Suburban, but I get your point, and it's a good one. All too often it is that people want you to stop what you're doing that they object to, in the name of some mysterious greater good, and yet they do plenty that is 'indictable' by their own standards. It is simple whining, for which we in our hunting group levy a $5 fine, respects to Chris LeDoux.

I a should have done something, but I should care and not let these tree huggers get over us thats why I didnt do a thing I beleive it pisses them off even more when you dont do anything. Plus I dont want to prolong my stay in this liberal state of washington, it seems like 9 months is going to be an eternety till I have my wide opean spaces. Thanks for all your in put. P.S. Chris LeDoux would've find em.

I would agree with the others in saying I would call your local game warden and make a complaint. It may not go anywhere right now, but you would have the start of a case if you are further harassed.

It was not all that long ago that an incident took place out here in CO. A group of hunters was hunting elk close to the front range when they spotted a herd in a small meadow along a trail. As they got set up to take a shot some "Hiker" saw what was about to happen and ran out between the hunter and the elk thus scaring the animals away by screaming and yelling. In the end, this "hiker" received heavy fines and almost spent time in jail for harassing wildlife. They were treated the same as a poacher. Had their belongings seized until they could pay the fine. By all means call, people like this deserve whats coming to them.

You handled the situation with grace and kept your cool. Now go turn the hippies in to the authorities....it's a crime to harrass the hunters in season.

Thanks you guys for your input, but I dont think that cow bells are illegal, I dont beleive i would have a foot to stand on. They could just say they knew there were a lot of bears in that area and that they were just trying to avoid conflict with the bears. They never made any direct harrisment towards me, they were deffinetly smart about the way thay did it. Im sure it wont be the last time this happens to me up here.

messing with the animals is more of a crime then messing with the hunter. as in most states animals are state property. messing with govt. property is bad.

the only way they could get out of it was if was one of them wierdo religous activities.

it's clear they came with the intent to harass. how many people carry cowbells in their car?

Trapperman,
I have hunted Washington for 43 years. During that time I have never encountered a tree-hugger. While on foot I have met one game warden in the field and another 8 at check stations. I know that Washington is proliferated with liberals. Fortunately most spend their fall mornings at the local Starbucks.
Remember that a lot of liberal wacko actor types with lots of cash are buying up a lot of real estate in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico. You may move back to Wyoming but the nuts are infiltrating your state also.

My youngest had the best solution to tree hugers. we where on a bear hunt one year & four of them stoped at our camp. now get this picture ( there's hounds tie'ed everywhere ) they ask us what we where hunt 'in. of corse my youngest steps up & tells them ducks. they give us a great big speech on animal curlty. so while were getting our speech my beloved little girl walks up behind one of them & pours bear scent in his rear pocket. ((( have a nice hike boys )) P.S. now that little girl is in Iraq in a black hawk . Gitterdone baby

Not sure if this applies for you, but i know here, (in NY state)- most multi-use areas (as deemed by the state)- require seperate permits and permissions for the land use. Some parks- for everything; hiking, swimming, camping, hunting, etc... obviously you don't have their names or anything, but do have a make and model of the car. If you are required to have permits there, report it to the rangers- probably nothing will be done, but a flag raised. It's your right just as much as theirs to use the land- but in most cases (again, in NY)- you can be banned from getting future permits if you abuse your priveledge.

I must say as well, good job on just walking away- it's not worth it for anyone, and a losing battle from the get-go as well as a tough situation. If more sportsman would take the attitude that you did, and i'm sure that we've all run into one or two quite the opposite, then this activities would be easier for everyone to enjoy. Ok... i'm off my soap box...
