I live in saskatchewan canada, I spend most of my hunting white tails and mulies. Both species up here can tip the scales at over 300lbs quit regularily. I shoot a 300wsm with 165gr Nosler partions. With the deer they have seemed to work really well from 75-428 yrd. With decent bullet place ment is it ethical to use a 165 on moose? I have taken 1 moose before with it, and it worked, and quit well i thought,62" bull. 905lbs of meat back. but i have had some negative feed back...looking for some opinions. I shoot factory ammo, and for a 300 wms it's expensive!! i dont want to switch if i dont have to. Can it be my alround bullet?

The 165 Partition is plenty of bullet out of your 300 WSM.A friend of mine has taken two moose using a 7MM Mag and 150 Remington Core Loks, going by that your rifle/bullet is plenty.

I would worry more about buying a good quality bullet liek the TSX's which in a 300 WSM will defenantly take a moose as long as you put them where you should, now if you are going to be in grizzly country nad wont be taking veryl ong shots say under 250 then i might opt for a 180 gr TSX as it would have more stoping power against a bear and the rxtra punch wouldnt hurt when you are shooting the moose either.

if it worked once it will work again. a 300 mag is plenty for moose
the nosler partition is a time tested buller that the tsx is a copy of.
i mean the moose isn't some mythical creature you need to use 220grain roundnoses on it's just a giant deer.
the only think i've ever seen mees some one up is dripping wet hide, water is tough on bullets

If it were me I might go to 180gr Partitions, but the versatility of handloading would give me that choice easily. Partitions are bullets by which others are judged, called the world's most reliable hunting bullet too. I think you will do just fine with your 165s.

The 165 should work just fine. Try the 180s and see how they shoot. Pick the one that shoots the best and take into account the ranges that you will be shooting. The 180 will retain energy better, butu not shoot quite as flat. Not enough to matter that much
Good Luck.

I own a 300 WSM and hand load 165gr. bullets. I chose them because I feel they give you the speed of a 150 gr., with almost the energy of a 180gr, all the while maintaining a flat trajectory. I have taken 2 moose and alot of deer with mine with no trouble at all. It is a great load and you should stick to it.

I always loaded my 06 with 180 grains for moose.

If you look at ballistics for both the .308 Winchester and the .30-06, the 165 is the sweet spot. That bullet catches the 150 in velocity before you get far from the muzzle (since the 150's bleed velocity a bit quicker), and catches the 180 in energy before it's of any consequence anyway (since it flies with enough increased velocity to make up the difference in weight).
I have no idea what the ballistics look like for the WSM, but I found that Hornady Light Mag loads with Interbond 165's fly well from my .30-06, and I intend to make that my go-to load. Use it for whitetails, and for whatever I happen to hunt far and near. I don't think I'll be moose hunting, but I'll take them for elk, caribou, mulies...wherever I wind up.
The WSM is supposed to have more punch, though, and the comparison I've heard is that the 180 is the WSM what the 165 is for the .30-06.
If you have a setup that works, I'd be inclined to stick with it. While I'm no moose hunter, I've heard of more than one moose who dropped to a measly .30-30.

I used 165gr nosler partitioned handloads in my 30-06 for several years and multible elk with good results. While my handloads didn't equal the 300wsm, I know you will be happy with the results. I had previously used 180 grain but liked the flatter shooting and performance of the 165 better.

Yes the WSM w/ 165 Partitions will take a moose, as proven by yourself. As for the negative feed back, if you were successfull how can anybody say something negative about the round?
Go for it. Hunt em hard.

Yes I think a partition in 165gr would work just fine for moose. It a load you have confidence in and that means a lot. The partition is an excellent bullet and you shold have plenty of power even for moose out of the 300WSM. Unfortunately, the 180s seem to be flying better out of my WSM right now, but I have not tried the partition yet.
