I was dinking around at my reloading bench today and I started loading dummy rounds (no powder or primers) just for the fun of it. I made a 270 WSSM, 7mm WSSM, and a 300WSSM. I started by taking my 243 WSSM cases and necking them up to a few diferent calibers. It got me thinking about making a wildcat cartridge and converting my winchester model 70 feather weight into a 308 WSSM. I don't really know a whole heck of alot about wildcatting so my theories might be way off. I am thinking that if the 243 win is a necked down 308 win then it stands to reason that if the 243wssm can produce faster velocities than the 243win then the same should hold true for the 308wssm and the old 308 win. I know that a lot of people will think that this is just crazy but I am intrigued by the idea of making my owne cartridge that will be unique. My question is does any body think that this would work and what kind of velocities do you think I could achieve? I am not expecting magnum performances but maybe I could get about 2,500 fps with a 150-165 gr bullet. Just a theory but I think it would be cool and I am gonna do some research on it. I also wonder if it would be easier to just have a gun built instead of converting my 243wssm. But then again I might just be able to have a gunsmith change the barrel to 308 and that might be it. Oh! Man! I need to slow down before I give myself a cardiac arrest!

Why?

What are you gaining?

In all reality, the .308 Winchester will operate in a short action rifle. So, what difference will it make to use a WSSM case?

My guess is that you will loose significant case volume when you expand the next to .308 and insert a 150-165 grain bullet. So, you will likely reduce the velocity and performance significantly. You may also subject yourself to significant pressures that are unsuitable for the rifle.

When wildcatting, you need to do your homework with great diligence. Otherwise, the result can mean a blown-up rifle and injury or death. I'd finish your homework before building the rifle.
