Even tho some folks will say this new "twist" to traditional New Years table fare is late, in reality it is very early--Yes "06" has been born but "07" is coming soon.

Everyone knows that you should eat cabbage and blackeye peas on New Years Day so you will have money thru-out the year--Of course the cabbage represents "paper money" (greens) and the peas represent "change" (coins)

In hurried grocery shopping for New Years I somehow picked up only two heads of cabbage--Thats un-heard of here because I normally cook at least six--(When a tru cajun cooks,he cooks plenty yeah)--(datstruyeah)--Once I started washing and culling the outside leaves of the cabbage I realized I did not have enough--We did have company coming that day--I wanted plenty greens so everyone could have plenty green thru the year

A friend of mine has a large garden--I called him up--This is New Years Day, bout 10:00am--He met me at the field--His cabbage was somewhat small, but his snow white cauliflower and emarald green broccilli caught my eye--I got one of each

Now everyone knows that these two veggies are normally par boiled till tender then placed in a baking dish, smothered with cheese and breadcrumbs then baked in the oven

Cajuns are very dangerous-----In cooking skills that is-----I washed the "flower and broc" down then introduced them to my already cooking pot of cabbage and smoked picnic ham chunks

Needless to say, it was heaven in a pot outside on a wood fire--Believe it or not, this is a wonderful "marriage" that will become a New Years tradition

Now----Everyone who cooks cabbage indoors knows that the house will smell the "p--t" for a few days, but when cooked outside it will "attract" the hungry neighbors so heres a word of WARNING----Ya better cook plenty 'cause once they get a taste of this new "marriage" they will clean the pot

Now--Lets see some new or old recipes from some of our cooks----Ain't this fun--(and tasty)----

The old man has been cookin cabbage every year since I can remember, only he cooks it with carrots, potatos and corned beef. Guess what, I'm still poor HaHa. Just kiddin. Actually I've never heard about the beans part. Have to give it a try. You ever heard of the first man through the door tradition? A shot of good whiskey between the man of the house and the first man through the door. I sometimes regret gettin over to the folks house first for New years day dinner after the night before.

The black-eye peas are cooked separate from the cabbage--The peas (cooked with smoked pork) represent "coins" and the cabbage represent "greens" (paper money)--

Now listen close--The tradition goes like this:--You have to eat peas and cabbage on New Years Day so you will "have money" thru-out the year--Note that it says nothing about "getting rich"--

I have had peas and cabbage on New Years Day ever since I can remember myself--At 53 years young I have always had enough money to pay my bills and feed my family every year

What more can a man ask for?------I am VERY wealthy------(datstruyeah)------
