Hey Solestrutter,
You cant go wrong with a block! I picked one up this fall long before the season and my son and I shot Hundreds of arrows into it. Just before the season started I put some broadheads in it which tore it up pretty good. If you stick with field points it should last for years. Keep it dry and out of the sun when you can. Also if your new to the sport I would recomend a decent size backstop for it like straw bales. (straw instead of hay if its in your back yard, wont premote weeds).
Most of my shooting is at 3-D targets and my Pro-Stop large bag target but I like the block because its portable and I can bring it to Maine on summer vacations and still shoot on the beach.
The morell Yellow Jacket is similar but I have not personaly shot one so I can not contest to it. The prostop is still my favorite, its filled with some kind of angel hair like fiberglass. Two finger removal and its lasted for six years with only one outer shell replacement (less than $10.00). I made a simple 2" pvc frame to hang it in and it works great.
Do your self a favor and get something on the large side to start with. The cost in saved arrows will pay for it in less than one day of shooting. Especially if your shooting carbons.
Whatever you end up with remember to keep yor bow in tune and check the components on a regular basis. Things loosen up and can change your impact point.
Be Safe and Have Fun, Dave

I would second Dclewis coments, but I will take it one setp farther. I have owned both the Block and the Block 4X4. The 4X4 holds up alot better to broad heads. After 180 shots I have my fist little triangle on the 4X4 where that happened with the first shot on the Block. Both are great targets and will last a long time. But it is worth saveing up a little more to get the 4X4. Here is a link to the 4X4 for you.

I have had the block target now for around 2 years and put about 50 shots a week through it and more during hunting season and it still is in great shape.

Don't laugh, but my first target was a filled bag from Wal-Mart. I have been shooting this bag now for 7 years and yes I shoot a lot. The arrows will pass through about 3 or 4 inches if I shoot at the center, so I put a box behind it. The arrows will not pass through while hanging. Cost $24. The Block is good but the arrows are a lot harder to pull out than they are from a bag. Just don't set it in front of a tree to hold the bag up. If you miss the cost to replace that arrow can ruin a good days shooting. Do like the guys said and put straw bales behind it. Hay bales will grow to much grass and weeds on them.

I remember when I had a stack of hay bales behind my target. After a while, if I missed, I started pulling out bloody arrows. What the....!?!? Turns out, a bunch of grass snakes nested all through the bales. Anyway. I use a block as well. Though I prefer McKenzie 3-D Targets, the Block is a great target. It does hold up to quite a few broadhead shots however, broadheads do tear the block up pretty good. I haven't been passing through the target completely, but the arrow has stuck out a good 10" out the other side. All from broadhead wear. Where your shooting 55lbs or 70lbs, a block should last you quite a while with field points.

I am new to the sport as well. I have found a lot of different targets are the same. Just with different packages. The guy that I shoot with has a target that is 4ftX4ft and 18in. deep. He made it by layering 3/8 in. foam and comperssing them with 2X4's and steel bands for shipping. I put over 300 arrows into that target in the same general area without any differance in the penetration. At the time I was shooting a 70# draw with 485 grain arrows. He does have the room on his land for this set up and a 3D walk through range. It is a great place to shoot.

I agree the Block is a great target for field points. It is portable and can handle a lot of shots with little or no damage. But I think it is to expensive for a broadhead target.
For about 1/2 the price I think the Morrell Yellow Jacket broad head target is a much better value, No scientific study or anything but it seems to me that it gives you a lot more shots per dollar.
Bag targets work best when hung rather than propped up against somethng so are a little less convenient to move around but do seem to have the easiet arrow removal. Obiously they are no good for Broad heads.
Just My 2 cents
