Hey guys; give me an opinion. Has anyone shot/own a Super Shadow in a 223 WSSM. Have a 7mm WSM; would'nt trade it for the world; just want to round out my field of fire. Also so have a Savage 93R17-FSS for 200 yds. and under critters; love it. Need something in mid range with less kick then the 7; and more power then the 17 for 200 to 500 yd. shots.[ Live in the country with lots of open ground ]:D Lots of cotoes; BIG black birds; and others to pop caps on; so am looking for a long range shooter for the $$$$

The 223 WSSM is a cool little round. It will perform with the .22-250 and the .220 Swift. And, the Winchester Super Shadow is a good rifle. I honestly think it would be a nice combination. However, using a .224 caliber bullet out to 500 yards may be a little dicey if you have any wind. A truer 300-500 yard rifle would be a 6mm or 6.5 mm rather than a 5.56mm.
However, if most of your shots are 250 to 400, the 223 WSSM will be great!
BTW -- I always thought the best little coyote round in Winchester's Short Mags would be the .257 WSSM. It brings enough smack and great range. But, that's simply my preference. Would make a nice antelope rifle also....

Looking at buying a .223 wssm for my son and i to coyote hunt with reading lots about barrells burning out . Would this happen if i only use factory ammo or is it happening with just hand loads that are to hot .
Any info would be great .

I think mine burnt out after about 4 boxes of shells. Took that sucker down to the gun store and traded it off for a 22-250. I could not be happier with my purchase, not only is it a shooter, the ease of fiding ammo and bullet selection is far greater in factory ammo. After only 4 boxes I was shooting about a 9in MOA. I am shooting less than 3/4 now with my 250. I think the .223 wssm is going to die and die hard.
Just my .02
The Hornady handbook mentions "significant throat erosion after 350 rounds." They add "This cartridge is hard on barrels." It is regarded as a barrel burner.
I've heard a rumor that the WSSM rifles are being discontinued. I don't know if that is true. I do see rifles being offered at low prices, so maybe this is true. Retailers are unloading old stock.
I do see the issue of the action length and bolt face diameter. I don't know of another cartridge that will fit these actions. I don't know what a fellow would do with one of these, except enjoy it while it lasts.

I would look at a 22-250.
I have a super shadow in 223wssm. I am having it rebarreled as it is defintely shot out. The barrel life isn't great, and I am pretty sure they have discontinued it as I looked on the winchester and browning web sites and didn't find anything. Also factory loaded ammunition was difficult to find. If you use factory ammunition I would look into a 22-250, there has been more time spent on developing the factory loads. There is a wide range of good factory loads available and you will be able to find a load that delivers the accuracy needed to connect with poodles way out there.
