I have noticed over the years, When it really cold and dry in the air, Dogs seem to have trouble pointing chukar and other birds. Anyone else see this.

It's not your imagination. There needs to be some moisture present to hold the scent for dogs. You will notice that dogs usually get more birds up with a light dew on the grass than after it dries out.

In my experience, it has to be REALLY cold and REALLY dry for my dogs to have trouble scenting chukar. I've only hunted chukar a few days when it was below zero but by mid-morning when the birds were moving around, we did fine. I've hunted many, many days in temperatures from 0 to the low teens. That is my favorite conditions to hunt chukar. The birds hold better when its cold and I don't have to carry 20 lbs. of water to keep my dogs hydrated.

I have an article on how weather conditions affect chukar hunting (http://iron-horse.us/chukar/where_to_find_chukar.shtml). Check it out.

My best chukar hunts have always come after a light snowfall. Early season the birds are flighty and it can be so dry that the dogs can't catch a scent. Cold weather has usually worked in my favor though.
