My idea would be a .243 or a 7mm-08. I think they should be able to do what your wanting to do. I don't think the shorter barrel will rob to much power to get the job done. as far as finding them cheap you can watch ebay,SOMETIMES you can get a bargain, watch the shipping cost! hope I helped Jim
these are encore calibers I was talking about. I reloaded for my neighbor a few years ago . I thought it was a contender . it was an encore .

I use a .30/30 Win on my Contender Frame. I use it for everything. I used to shoot lots of Prarie Poodles with my .223 tube, very accurate. Thinking about a muzzleloader barrel.

the 243 and 7mm-08 are very good flat shooting rifles with no recoil. I own a youth model 7mm-08 and it will do a job on a deer, and will blow a coyotes sholder out, but also consider the 25-06, and 25 wssm.
not sure in they make a encore 25wssm barell but it is a very fine caliber also if you wanted to go out west a 7mm-08 can take a elk. Because most people think it doesnt have enough power but factory ammunition ranges from 110 grain to 175 grain bullets.

Is this for a Contender or an Encore? Two different guns and different chamberings.

I have used the 30 30 for over 10 years, it works very well on Mule Deer here in Oregon using 150 Graing balistic tips. I also use cast 170 grain bullets with outstanding accuracy. Would not hesitate to hunt deer or elk with either.
I do have a 223 for varmits.
If you decide to go the hotter rifle calibers you will need the Encore.
Contender is possibly finest pistol I have ever shoot. Consistant accuracy accross the board. 30 30 especially good as it is avialable all over the country if you don't reload or run out on a hunting trip.
