What yardage are you zeroed at??? I also shoot a 300 Weatherby and Nosler 180 grain bullets. What reloading data are using to get 3400 fps? I'm shooting 81 grains of RL22 and I only get 3115 fps.

Use the Nosler reloading manual with ballistic charts. Otherwise, Hornady has ballistic charts in there reloading manual. Or, look up ballistic charts on the internet. You simply need to know the ballistic coefficient, bullet weight and velocity.

BTW -- If you are shooting to 800 yards, realistically, the charts will only serve as a rough starting point. You will need to actually shoot the yardage to record it for your rifle.

RichD-
Hope you're target shooting at that distance. That's way beyond the distance that would allow you to be sure of an accurate shot and a quick, humane kill on a deer or elk. Besides, you'd need salted bullets to make sure the game wouldn't spoil before you could get to it.

I would also like to know what load you are using. Your velocity sounds more like what you would get out of a 30-378 Weatherby than a 300 Weatherby.

Sorry guys - I was out of town for a few days. The load is 86 grains IMR 7828 which was recommended by a hunting friend a few years ago. He chrono'd the muzzle velocity at 3,420. As far as distance of a shot that I would take, my longest is just over 450 - 1 shot on a muley last year. I'm curious to see what the effective killing range for elk would be (not that I would take an 800 yeard shot). My hunting partner and I got into quite a nice herd of elk this past first season, but he lasered them at 775+ to well over 1,000. They were pretty spooked from the get-go and scattered to private land before we could figure out how to close the distance across the open range between us and them. Interestingly enough, we ran into the area DOW officer later that week - he was observing us watch the herd from a distance and applauded us for not taking ridiculously long shots.

One more thing - I'm sighted at 3" high at 200 yards. I don't generally sight in for MOA accuracy with a .300 hunting rifle. We put a few clay targets in the berm behind the 200 yard range at my gun club, approx 215-220 yards. If you can hit a 4" clay target at that distance, that's pretty OK for most deer/elk shots.
