My friends and I are planning an Elk and Mule Deer hunt next October in Jackson Hole, Wy area . We can't afford a guide so we are planning on camping out and hunting public lands. Anyone have any suggestions of where to camp or hunt?

Make sure you get a good tent and good pair of boots. Good luck, I haven't had the pleasure to hunt Wyoming yet. Although I have killed a Mulie in the Sandhills of NE

Hello,I hunted for moose in moose unit 18 and saw lots of deer and about 40 elk,it is mostly national forest and camping is allowed for free. Be prepared for cold and snow,I shot my moose on Oct. 1st and it was 16 degrees and 6-7 inch's of snow.I used a plastic sled to haul out the moose and it took 6 trips over two days. Be prepared for anything and good hunting!

I was just looking at the Wy DNR page yesterday. I was thinking about the same thing. I did notice that they do require you to have a guide if you're going into certain wilderness areas. They've got them marked on the hunting maps of the state. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be doing a trip like that for a while, just can't afford something like that right now. Did you mean 06, or 07? They're application deadlines for some hunts are as early as Jan, so if you're planning on this year, you should make some calls to the Wy F&G Warden right away.
