I'm looking at purchasing a new rifle for sheep hunting and other backcountry hunts. I'm planning on getting a 7mm08 and I've been looking at Kimber's Montana model, as well as Remington's model 700 mountain rifle. I like the feel of the Kimber but I'm wondering about recoil with a rifle that weighs slightly over 5 lbs without the scope. Does anybody have any experience shooting a Kimber in this caliber?

I have a tikka model 595 with a scope in the 7mm-08 cal. it is great. I can shoot all I want in a day without getting the flinches . the recoil is very little. it has about the same recoil as my sons remington 760 in the .243 cal. if you get one I think you will be very happy. I hope I helped. jim

Although I don't own the model rifle which you are considering, 7MM-08 is a fairly mild recoiling caliber in a standard rifle of 7-8 lbs. Even in a 6lb rifle and scope combination such as the Kimber or Remington mountain rifle, the recoil should be quite manageable. Consider that a 7-8 lb. 7MM-08 has approx. 12-13 foot lbs. of recoil: even if you increase the recoil by 25% in a feather weight rifle, you are in the 16 lb range which is only about what a .270 generates out of a standard weight rifle. This being said, recoil is a subjective thing and some people find even rifles in the .270 range uncomfortable to shoot. I would say that you are in a very conservative recoil range with a caliber such as this.

I own a remington model seven with a youth stock and barell in 7mm-08, it is a good all sround caliber that can shoot any thing from varmints to elk, I havent shootin any kimbers though, just make sure you get at least a 140 grain bullet for sheep. I am a small framed 13 year old (90) pounds and recoil is basically nothing, just make sure it ways over 6 ounds the lighter the rifle the more the muzzel brake and kick.
