Has anyone here actually heared a live buck grunt? The closest I've heared was the discovery channel. The reason I ask, is I used the true talker and I don't think it sounds exactly like a real grunt. I was wondering if there was a tube that does.
BTW, if you havent actually heard a real deer grunt, I don't need speculation, I've done plenty of that on my own.
Thanks
I have heard several deer grunt and feel that the true talker accurately reproduces the sound. It is the call that I have used most. I have grunted in a couple bucks with it. I usually just blow into the call to get the grunt sound but you can try pressing down slightly on the flexible portion to get a little bit of a higher pitch - not to much though. The other nice thing about the call is that you can also make bleats with it without having to change calls or o-rings. I wouldn't give up on the true talker but it never hurts to try different calls. Bucks make diferent kinds of grunts from longer drawn out tending grunts to shorter staccato-like grunts when they are chasing does on the move. It is tough to describe the sound in writing but it is kind of like an urrrrrrp. One of the best things you might do is get videos and watch the outdoor channel to mimic how the TV guys grunt deer in. Best of luck.

One of the problems I've had with many grunt calls is they don't sound real enough. There is always that artificial, "plastic" tonal feel... I always like a wood call to get that slightly earthy quality.
I've heard quite a few bucks grunt... even the little guys do it. The hardest part I've had with blowing a grunt is deciding if they're too close together... am I grunting too much? Not enough?
Watch the hunting shows for grunt tactics os good advice.

Beeell,
I have had the luck to hear lots of bucks grunt, snort, wheeze and blow. They make different sounds for their moods, mating, following, tending, fighting or playing. Iv'e used several name brand calls and I don't think it is so much the call as it is the way you blow the call and the cadence. I use soft calls with a long grunt (The cadence I use the most) 3 soft short, 1 long, 2 soft short. The more your out in the woods the more sounds you'll hear deer make and you can mimic the sounds, even with your own voice. I was fortunate enough this year to call in a bruiser using the above cadence and shot him at 25 feet!! He came in so fast and stomped in to fight me. I use the Carlton Call.
Good Luck,

Yah, I know what you guys are saying, I've watched a number of videos, and even seen the pros in person. I've been hunting a number of years as well. But I hunt what you'ld consider high pressure state land so maybe that has something to do with my not hearing the deer. I've actually managed to take some nice deer from this patch of woods, so its not that thier not around. I have just not heard them. I've even been to a place where they keep live deer, and have yet to hear one grunt. I guess I've lost confidence in everything I've seen, because I don't hear it in the woods. How often do you use the tube? I'll keep tryin. Late Archery is here now, and hopefully I'll be able to get out more than I have been, and try to call that bruiser in.

The True Talker is one of the best in my opinion. Most effective piece of deer hunting equipment I have and I wouldn't be in the woods without it. Yes I have heard bucks grunt while they were trailing does during the rut. Also heard a doe grunt to her yearling a couple of years ago. Haydel's NT-02 is another good grunt call that's a little higher pitched than the True Talker. I carry both with me and call in bucks during archery season in Nebraska every year.

Does Cabela's carry vidoe tapes on calling game?

Yes, however it looks like the online store doesn't have as big a selection as the retail outlet do. I have a primos video and that has been pretty instructional, but like I said, as far as I'm concerned, it's hearsay until I actually get a deer to respond to my calls, or at least hear one otherwise.

I wonder if deer sound different by region. Birds call based on sounds they have heard growing up. I wonder if the deer will grunt different in TX than they do in PA. I have never hunted down south but have heard deer down there are smaller. Has anyone out there every noticed a difference in the way they sound?

I was fortunate enough to hear some deer grunts in the woods this year. I have a Primos Rubber Necker grunt tube and it sounds exactly like a buck grunt. I love that call, it sounds great and is all rubber so it is quiet out in the woods.

Thats interesting airborne...I never thought about that. You might be on to something. Anyone know?
Ya know I'll bet you're right. I've seen and heard deer grunt, snort, and stamp their right front hoof. Haven't got deer talk sorted out yet, but what I have found is a low grunt(big buck) will stop an old doe dead in her tracks, while a young buck will instantly start sneaking away. Haven't had any response with a higher pitch(doe or young) grunt that I've noticed. Stamping a foot once get's them to raise their heads in unison, but a big buck will drop it's head.
I'd wager in an area with smaller deer a low grunt would send them sneaking away. That's really interesting, there you go, get yourself a gov. grant and spot deer under the gov. umbrella, HA! Better yet, maybe get some $$ out of the animal rights groups, course you'd have to harvest a few along the way, to scientifically compare windpipe sizes.....Course to properly conduct the hunt, er I mean study you'd have to hunt, er travel all over N America. HAHAHAHA

That sounds like a good idea. I retire from the Army in two months and was looking for a new reason to hun.. work. Ok now let's get statred by everyone sending me....... say.....$5000 each and I'll buy the best camo and spotting equipment there is. Do you think $75,000 would be to much for a spotter scope? Now i may have to use the bathroom out there so I will need toilet paper at $653 per roll. ( I promise to use it one sheet at a time). I will also need an assistant at .... about????? $5.35 per hour. Anybody interested??? ( private roll required)
