Just got back from a week long trip in the Moose River Recreation Area in the Adirondaks, NY. First time outside Ohio to hunt. Didn't see a thing all week. We hunted hard....hunted morning till night, on the ridges and in the valleys and swamped, stillhunted, did drives, and standhunted. Mostly quite hunting but did use some scents, rattles, and calls. We saw only two other hunters all week. We even canoed to the far side of lakes. Saw very little, almost no sign despite covering massive quantities of territory. we also had a lot of weather variation......from sunny and 50s to snowy and 20s, to clear and sunny in the teens.
Is this typical when hunting in NY wilderness? What techniques would you use? Any suggestions besides getting a guide? Am I spoiled in Ohio seeing deer nearly every day hunting in a stand? I understand deer densities are much lower in the Adirondaks (I've heard 4 per square mile vs 40 per square mile in prime Ohio land)

Hey Ohio,
Sorry to here about your luck. Try next time in the hudson Valley. I usually see to or three bucks just on my 30 min ride to my prime spot in east-central NY. I cant say i,ve ever hunted the Adaks but why would I when there is so much game in my backyard. Dave

ohiooutdoorsman, The Moose River Plains is a challanging place to hunt. The winters are hard on the deer.Hunting in the deep woods is nothing like hunting Ohio or NY's southern zone where there are 1.5 deer behind every tree.Snow is the key.It makes finding the deer a lot easier.During the rut bucks are travaling between doe group to doe group trying to find does in heat and these groups could be miles apart.I like to track deer when there is snow on the ground.Even if you don't get a deer it teaches you where the deer hangout and how they travel through the woods. When there is no snow I like to hunt travel corridors and ridge tops.Don't give up .Getting a deer in the big woods will be your most rewarding deer you will ever shoot.

You did pick a tough spot to hunt. There are a lot of deer throughout the Moose River Plains the only part is they are tough to find during hunting season. I would say you experienced a typical Adirondack hunt. During winter can hand feed the deer on the Moose River Plains, we do it each winter while snowmobiling that area.

Gary-
You better get that shotgun dusted off Turkey season is a comming- and I have been seeing a few woodchucks out and about- that was before the snow started falling again lastnight! The other day I drove by a corn field and there were 7gobblers out there struting there stuff. They all had about 5 or so hens except one. he was on the edge of a hedge row and was by himself- that must have been one ugly turkey because there were about 20hens in the field and he could not attract one. I yelled out the window at him not to worry- I think you'll look good on my wall in a couple of weeks.
