I bought a 300 rem ultra mag and I am planning on using it for moose, caribou, black bear, and maybe sheep. I am not planning on hunting brown bear but I would like to be prepared for the worst if you know what I mean. I hand load and I am thinking about some 200 gr accubond, a-frame, tsx, or maybe even a north fork bullet. The 300rum should be able to push a 200 gr pill out of the barell at about 3,100 fps so I think it should do the job maybe even a litle overkill. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

For what it's worth, I happened to be at the counter at my local range pro-shop last year when a guy came in and bought every box of Sierra 220 grain ProHunters they had on the shelf. He said he was heading up to Alaska where his brother lived and who shot a .300 Win. Mag. He loved those Sierras and this guy was bring him a pile of them. I guess there may be tougher bullets around, but I've also used Sierras in other, non-dangerous applications and they have worked well.
Hope you enjoy your hunt.

dont you think at .223 caliber is a little light for moose in Virginia its illigal to hunt a deer with anything under a 24. but I think the .300 rem ultra mag is a very good choice with a bullet range of 200 to 225.

I Have A Cousin That Shoots A 300 Ultra Mag Rem 700. He Shoots Barnes Triple Shock Bullets And Has Had Great Results. He Hunts In Montana And Has Killed Several Moose Along With Elk. The Bullet Performance Was Awesome. He Shoots 180 Grain Bullets, With That Bullet He Gets Great Range And Accuracy Up To 500 Yards Plus And Still Has Spectacular Knock Down Power. I Wouldn't Hestitate To Use The Triple Shock Bullet On Any Big Game Including Bear If One Was Encountered.

I Also Use Triple Shock Bullets In My 300 Win Mag And Have Had Great Sucsses Along With Spectacular Knock Down Power As Well. Barnes Is Known For Their Penetration As Well As Their Weight Retention. I Have Nothing Bad To Say About Barnes Bullets On Big Game, And They Will Do Great Things For You.

Nash,

I use a .300 Win Mag most of the time in Alaska. I mainly stay with Trophy Bonded (1st choice) , Swift A, (2nd choice) or even Fail Safe (last resort), but my 300 perfers TB and all have performed very well for me and my hunting partners. I think triple shocks are quality bullets to use, if, your rifle shoots them well.

The other posts seem to talk more about caliber choice rather than specific bullets. 300 Win Mag, RU Mag, or 300 WSM will all do the trick on just about everything AK but I would not use any for interior or coastal grizzlies.

Good luck,

Grayling

I have loaded some trial ammo with 200 gr accubond, 200gr a-frame, 180 gr triple shock x-bullets and I am lookin forward to testing them out at the range as soon as the weather clears up a litle bit here in idaho. My favorite bullet for large big game such as elk/moose is barnes so I am hoping that they will shoot good in my new rifle. Time will tell I guess.
