8wt reel and lighter wt rod

Im new to fly fishing. I was just wondering if using a heavier weight reel like an 8 wt with a lighter rod and line setup like 4 wt would hurt the rod or line or have any other negative effects. I have an extra 8 wt reel that I like but would like to get 4 or 5 wt setup for trout. Any info on this would be much appreciated.

It wont matter. The larger reels are just that...larger. This is so they can hold more backing and larger flyline. Just set the drag lighter and fish on. Make sure the rod matches the line. I've seen guys do this all the time when they change from small creek trout to the large steelhead and back.

The only issue would be balance.......the reel just may be more heavy than you would like for the lighter rod. Just go light on the backing if this is the case.
