Is a rub on a tree or the ground and is scrape on the tree or the ground?
I thought a rub is on the ground and a scrape is on a tree, but my dad diasgrees.

I thought it was the opposite of what you said.

I have always thought a rub was on a tree and a scrape on the ground.

A rub is where a buck rubs the velvet off his antlers and releases a scent from his forehead gland to mark territory. A scrape occurs on the ground and is a social marking of a buck's terretory and kind of message board for the deer in that area. Both bucks and does visit scrapes...

Your dad is correct. Buy him breakfast this year when you guys go hunting.

Got a nice 7 off a tree rub line in central Ohio this week with the crossbow. Only like scrapes when they are in the prime rutting area for that spot.

Sometimes Dad knows best. There are different rubs and scrapes. Some rubs are for getting the velvet off. Others are for territory. I like to see rubs because it tells me there is a buck in an area. Sometimes the size of tree rubbed gives an idea of size too. I have noticed that in different areas I hunt the deer have specific types of trees they rub. One place I hunt they love to rub either red cedar or beech. Not more than a mile away they like dogwood and maples. I do like to hunt scrapes. The bigger the better - also the cleanest is best. Hunted one that was the size of a dinner table. You will notice that scrapes may be in the same place from year to year - same with rubs. Good luck.
