Help. Just wondering if anyone has tried the new Hornady SST in 12 ga or 20 ga. I use a 12 ga. Most or all shots are less than 100 yards. What is the heoght of bullet at 50 and 75 yards if zeroed at 100 yards? Also, my wife shoots a Rem. 870 20 ga. smooth bore. Anyone try it out of a smooth barrel? Accuracy? Distance?

Shot Hornady SSTs out of my remington 870 express for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Shot decent out of my gun 2" groups at 50 yds. Had it 2" high at 50 yds, was on center target at 100yds w/ 4" three shot groups.

The limiting factor of my setup is my crummy shooting followed by my gun. I've yet to see a "tack-driver" shotgun. So in retrospect, all of the ballistic superiority of SSTs is wasted in my gun. Personally I feel that I've expanded my range only from 75 to 100 yds from these guns with the SSTs.

I wonder why gun manufacturers don't make heavier slug guns with thicker barrels ao than we can get some decent accuracy. Its only fair to the game for us stuck in shotgun only states.

What I was impressed by was the low recoil of the SSTs. They must use a much lighter bullet. Felt less than the 2 3/4" winchester supex-X that i usually use. For this reason, and their resonable price, I will be using them this season. We'll see how the terminal preformance of these lighter bullets is.

As for the smooth bore......I've never heard of anyone using saboted slugs out of a smoothbore. I'd advise to stick to the foster style slugs. I would think the SSTs would need the rifled barrel to shoot accurately at all.

Good luck.

OhioOutdoorsman, thanks. I shoot a Mossburg 500A with a rifled barrel with a low power scope. I usually sight in at 25 yards - this puts my Winchester/BRI Sabot dead on, then 50 yds is 2 in high, dead on at 75 and 2 in low at 100 yds. Tack driver? Don't know but I can hold a 3 inch or less group at 100 yards. Like I said, most shots are less than that. Actually, I do not hunt a place where I can shoot long ranges normally - but I do have one place a two hundred yard shot may be worth the time and money. Good hunting and be safe.

They were 2 in high at 50 yds but about a foot high at 100yds. I went with the Remington Premier Core-Lokt Ultras.

Out of my Benelli SBE, ER Shaw slug barrel, Leopold 4X scope, I couldn't keep 5 shots on a 12 X 18 target @ 100 yards.
I then proceeded to shoot a 5 shot group with Remington Copper Sabots to see if my gun was at fault. These shot a group of 3 1/2 inch CTC.
I always remind people that each slug gun is its own. Your groups may be different, but if you aren't shooting at least a 5 shot group, I wonder how valid any comments are.
