I am only 15 and live in he city. My parents dont enjoy hunting so i cant buy a gun. To their disaproval i have recently made my own long bow and arrow. I took pbc pipe for the bow and used fly line for the string. the arrow is a old long fiberglass rod i found in the garage. I use a broken razor blade for the tip and have been precticing on a homemade target. Im trying for a squirrel if i can just get close enough with out the neighbors seeing me. Does anyone else have stories like mine about "homemade hunting utensils?" Or doing it the hard way?

It is not the hard way, it is the American way. You are to be commended for your use of the grey matter between your ears......I did a similar thing 40 plus years ago. Took a string and made a snare to catch a cottontail. Read all the old writing a kid in the 50's could get, mostly from the libary in town. Set the snare useing a hanging pole and a figure four stick trigger with a piece of ear corn for bait. The rabit took the bait, got caught and promptly bit thru the string and escaped. Back to the drawing board. Take Care. Tom

Hunter

I will just tell you to keep your nose to the grindstone and keep fighting for your desire to hunt. I am impressed!!!

Maybe there are some youth shooting groups in your area. You have a computer so do the search. Maybe your parents would permit you to follow your passion if they knew you were being taught properly. Did your dad ever hunt with his father or grandfather? My Dad did't hunt or fish with us but two of us three boys are very much into the outdoors. We live to hunt and fish.

Good job with the ambition but be careful. There is always a certain amoiunt of danger that goes with handmade items. It is fun but if the things you make can kill small game, it can hurt you too.

I would like to know how you made out with finding a local club and if your Dad is willing to be part of what you enjoy.
