Hi everyone!

I recently bought 'my' first shotgun, and while checking out gun/hunting sites, I found this board. There is a lot of good info and discussion here!

I own a Charles Daly Field Hunter VR-MC Left Hand 12ga with a 28" barrel. I have sent about 125 shells through it so far, at standing targets, and shooting trap (learning how to!!) with a guy I work with, and my 14 year old son.

My son showed he could safely and properly handle a gun, and he also showed a great interest in shooting. After talking to him about shooting trap and hunting, plus talking everything over with my wife, I decided to get him his first gun. For Christmas he will be getting a Remington 870 Express 20ga with a 28" barrel.

The 3 of us (me, my son, and my co-worker) went to Gander Mtn. this morning (sorry, the closest Cabela's is 3+ hours away but Gander Mtn. is only 35 minutes) and did some shopping...upland hunting coats, shells, butchering knife sets, etc. We are getting our 'ducks in a row', and will start hunting together after next weekend.

My son and I are going to a standing target 'meat shoot' tomorrow. Hopefully we can bring home some nice meat for our Thanksgiving table.

I'll probably 'lurk' quite a bit and not say much here for a while...but I wanted to jump in and say 'Hi'.

Thanks for the Welcome!

I have good results!!

We got to the Turkey shoot kinda late, and there was only 2 rounds left. Each round had 12 guys shooting a standing target from 100' using a 12ga. with a full choke.

I shot the first round, and kinda zero'd in on the pattern. I told my boy where to put the bead, and my son shot the second round. He and another guy each had a pellet really close to the 'X'...the winner was too close to call so they had a shoot off. Again, they each had a pellet really close to the 'X'..this time they got a set of calipers to measure the distance from the 'X'. The holes were EXACTLY the same distance away!! Once again, a shoot off. This time my son clearly won..talk about a kid being happy!!, and a dad being really proud!

This year for Thanksgiving we will be eating a 15.6 lb turkey. And all it cost us was $8, and a really good time between father and son!

Next week is another shoot...and my son already said he wants to go back. LOL

Welcome Leadfoot. Sounds like you and your son are on the right track. Remington 870 is hard to beat for a beginner, or someone who shoots all the time. When you really get hooked, and shoot a Benelli, do yourself a favor...don't let your son shoot it too. I made that mistake one quail season in AZ, and ended up using the 870 for the better part of the weekend, because my son just HAD to use the Benelli. Knew I should have bought two of them!!

Welcome to our world.

Hunt Safe,

Kyle
