View Full Version : Walmart guns?

Basspro folks told me their guns were made cheaper, 2nd hand wood and metal. Other folks have said they don't. Wal-Mart folks have said they get their guns form the exact same place, which leads me to believe them. Who know for sure?

Someone was pulling your leg, although I won't say who...
Firearms usually go like this:
1. Manufacturer
2. Distributor
3. Retailer
They all come from the same place basically, just maybe different distributors. Some big chains deal directly with the manufacturer though as Wal-mart may do. Here's the deal. No firearms manufacturer is going to produce a second rate gun for Walmart. A Winchester M70 from Wally-world is going to be the same Winchester M70 you get at Bass Pro of Cabela's. Usually, they are a bit cheaper because of the volume Walmart buys. I bought a Winchester M70 Super Shadow from Walmart a few years back. The only difference is it had a scope mounted. It is the same gun I could have bought anyplace else. The only difference was the scope being mounted and they may be right there. The scope was a POS, that I quickly removed and replaced with a much better scope.
This kind of misinformation aggrivates me to no end. It is irresponsible info like what they told you that leads to reckless lawsuits. "I heard it had second rate steel so I'm suing!" Grrrrrrrrr!
Sounds like some guys were acting like amateurs...

There is no difference. Personally I would buy from walmart if people at Bass-pro are going to say that:)

Wal Mart can order any gun from any catalog (they have their own catalog as well).
You can order any model from any Manufacturer (except the custom stuff).
They choose to carry certain models but those models are tha same as any other store.
No such thing as "Seconds" Guns, think of Wal Mart's Sales Volume, nobody could make Crappy Guns in that high volume.

One thing that the stores like Walmart and Best Buy do is have a manufacturer make a product that is excusive to them like change the color a bit or some other small thing that gives the product a new model number. It makes it harder to compare because you do not know what is different between two items that seem the same but have slightly different model numbers.
I was just shopping for a washing machine. We were deciding between a Whirlpool and a Kenmore. The Kenmore is made by Whirlpool but had buttons instead of a dial and a few features that the Whirlpool didn't offer.
I have a Wards Western Field .30-30. It is a great gun and I will never part with it. It is made by Mossberg and is the same as their Model 472.

Walmart does this with guns in that they have scope packages that aren't offered in other retailers. The gun is the same though.
Speaking of Mossbergs... I have a New Haven model 600 laying around. It is basically a Mossberg 500 with a fixed choke barrel. I asked Mossberg about it and they told me it was a model they sold many many years ago in small mom-n-pop retail outlets such as hardware stores etc...

Could Wal-Mart get a Benelli r1 Comfortech cheaper than Basspro or Cabelas then? If they could it would make more sense ot get it there.

One nice thing about buying a gun at a gun store and not a discount retailer is that the gun store can help you out if you have any problems or need any gunsmithing done. With a discount retailer after you leave the store you are SOL.

Actually, if you check the special order prices at Wally world, they tend to be the same as other retailers. Might as well go to Cabela's, where it'd be in stock.

I bought a gun from the local Walmart and it was $80 dollars less than what the local gun store wanted to charge me.

Was it special order? If they had it in stock, you do quite often get it cheaper. If you ordered it and got it for $80 less, I'd say cool!. Cheaper gun prices kick butt!

Yes it was special order. A NEF Buffalo Classic in 45-70. Comes with a 32in barrel and chonographs nearly 400 fps faster than what my reloading book says a 45-70 with a 22in barrel can do.

Ok, so I'm really only resurrecting this thread for bearhunter's benefit (another fossilized dinosaur thread)... but I do remember Wally World carried the Sam Walton edition 1100. Nothing like having an 1100 with Sam's head emblazened in gold on the side of the receiver. I don't know if they were any different than a standard 1100, though.

I bought my single shot Remington 12 gauge at Wal-mart as well as a Stevens .22 LR semiauto. Can't complain,a new single shot at Wal-Mart is cheaper than a used one at a gun store.

My step grandma works as Wal-Mart and she bought my Grandpa some collectible Winchester shotguns and one of the last regular production Winchester 1894's. The Wal-Mart around here that stocks firearms goes through the same distributors as some gun shops around here do so they are all equal quality firearms.

Second rate? No.
Subtle differences? Yes.
Models "made specifically for Wal Mart"? In many cases, yes.
Wal Mart isn't the only retailer who's ever done it, either. Two from the past which come to mind are Sears and Montgomery Ward.

My first rifle that I bought was a Mod 70 270WSM Winchester built rifle specifically for Wal-mart. I called to ask about what model it was using some identifing numbers from my gun. Winchester told me it was a special make for Wal-mart. It looks just like the old Black Shadow (I think that's it) or the current Ultimate shadow. I paid 398 plus tax/CA DROS fee for it. Other than the cheap scope, with got replaced, it is an amazingly accurate rifle with several loads I've developed making 3 shot cloverleafs at 100M.

I had a old Coast to Coast Marlin .22 LR. My father in law has one my mother in law ordered from a department store 45 years ago,a lever action .22 mag.Still has it,still shoots it.

And I still have a "Western Field" shotgun which my mom bought for me at Montgomery Ward when I was a teenager. It was a series of pump shotguns in the 500 line which were made for MW by Mossberg, equipped with a "C-Lect Choke" feature on the barrel where you simply turn it to change the choke restriction. I still take it out and shoot it from time to time and I've never had a problem with that shotgun, and there isn't a reason in the world why I couldn't hunt with it now (other than the fact that semi-auto shotguns have made me lazy on that action).
Our store received a Sears Ted Williams over/under a couple of months ago in a trade, and I believe we still have it on our shelves. That entire lineup was made for Sears by Winchester.

Wal mart guns are the same as if you buy them anywhere else. They sell the cheaper models usually but they're still good guns. Normally they have mossbergs and 870s and H&R singleshots.

I thought Antonio Zoli produced most of the Sears/Ted Williams line of O/Us with Laurona making a few more? I have done a fair bit of research on Nikko Golden Eagle shotguns which was the manufacturer of the Winchester 101 O/U and have not seen mention of their being rebadged for Sears. I would greatly appreciate being directed to a source for this as I run into a fair number of Sears guns and it would help immensely in discovering good deals.

For some reason, I'm thinking that the model which was traded in to us was an earlier version of one of Winchester's 101 O/U's, made for sale under Sears' Ted Williams Model 400 line. I may be wrong, but I will check it when I get back to work and post results later tonight.

have bought guns at almost every shop within 100 miles of my home and that inculdes WalMart. I purchased a Weatherby Vangaurd at Wal Mart for $299 that is one of the most accurate rifles I have ever owned.I think what they sell is as good as if bought anywhere.

The Model 400 we have at the store did indeed come from Winchester. There's not much said about the guns in the Blue Book of Gun Values, but there are a couple of the same model listed in the archives of various auction sites.

Pretty neat to go back and look at some of the Sears Ted Williams firearms and who made them. There are many which were made by several different manufacturers, at least according to the cross referencing in the back of the blue book.
