I read my local outdoors magazine the other day and read in the talk back section a complaint about a answer in the previous months magazines crossword puzzle. The complaint stated that in this puzzle a question that said give a nickname for a ringneck pheasant used often, the answer was "Chink" refering to the negative name for a Chinese person, I thought what a jerk this writter is!
His defense was that the term is often used during all his years hunting in Ca., Montana, North and South Dakota and many other pheasant states. Is this true? I have never heard any one in all my years use this term while hunting this great game bird. Is this guy liying or what to save face?

I was born in S. Dakota and have a ton of family back there- I hunt there at least once a year for pheasants and I've never heard them called that before.

That is a nickname for pheasants that went out a good half century ago. It was not uncommon for them to be called this from their introduction back in the late 1890s until the the mid-1940s or so and magazine articles can be found refrerring to them by this name. The last time I saw this used in print must have been in the early 1970s by a writer who was old enough to be writing of his remembrances rather than his actual doings. Today, the most common printable nickname I here for pheasants are "ditch parrots", when you miss them or have a brokenwing runner the names can get very creative.
