While I was camping along the coast of Maine, I noticed two guys walking out on to the clam flats. They were well equiped: hippers, forks, bags. I watched as they moved fromm spot to spot harvesting the sweet soft shell clam from the coast of Maine.
Knowing that if I did so, they may shoot me, I decided to make them an affer when they came back. Twenty-Two dollars for one peck. I proceeded to wash them under the camp faucet. I placed half of them in the largest pot we had. Sweetest little necks I encountered till I started digging them myself.

Hey Yooper Sportsman, I hope you are talking about zebra mussels. I don't want to burst your bubble, but if your in michigan as the name implies the only mussels and clams we can get are at the grocery store.
It's unlawfal to...
Take or attempt to take freshwater mussels (clams or other bivalves) whether living or dead,
including the shell or parts thereof (except zebra mussels) from any waters of the state except under
provisions of a cultural or scientific investigation permit from the DNR.

Why is that? Are they poisoness?

I'm pretty sure poison isn't the case. Probably due to low population more than anything else. They're natural water filters, so they serve a valuable purpose for the great lakes.

Yeah, the Yoopers have clams alright. I caught one up near Silver City when fishing in a little stream. (That was a nice lure I lost, too.) I have to admit I was surprised at my catch.

Nah. No Yooper's got clams... Some of them gots another kind of shellfish, but I digress.
What's a Yooper?
Well ya see. Michigan is made of two parts. The bottom half that looks like a mitten is called the Lower Peninsula. It's full of trolls and has vile places like Detroit and Ann Arbor.
Then there is the top half, known as the Upper Peninsula. Most folks in Michigan refer it this part of the state as the U.P. (Upper Peninsula - get it?) So if you's were to say U.P. you might say that a person living there is a Yooper. So the U.P. is full of Yoopers, trees deer and bears and has beautiful places like Marquette, Ishpeming and Houghton.
Does this help?
