Just wanted to see if anyone had any hunting experience with German Long Haired Pointers. I've been looking into getting a dog for a while now and I really like the breed. I've only hunted with one, as they're pretty rare, so wanted to see if anybody had any info. I'd like to know what their energy levels can be like. Are they too high-strung? I know they're great on upland game-how do they do on waterfowl? Any extra info would really be appreciated. Thanks

The Longhair is definitely a rare breed here in the USA. If you are looking to get one, I would look for strong German lines in the JGHV. Otherwise, you will likely struggle in seeing any diversity.
As for energy etc., most all pointing dogs will have ample energy. Just like their cousins, the GWP and GSP, they will exhibit as much energy as needed in the field, but can be pretty calm at home. This is something that is determined more by breeding than by breed. Typically, the German breeders will have pups that will be more calm. I have a Drahthaar and although she can be very active in the field, she is very calm at home. The Langhaar would be much the same.
As for waterfowl, they will work great. I think the GWP/DD makes a better choice, but the Longhair will get the job done similar to the shorthair. Their only drawback would be cold water or fast moving water where a true retriever would be better.
