I live in Portland, Oregon and was wondering if anyone new of a good squirrel hunting place within an hour or two of portland. I own a 12ga shot gun and was wondering if it would be over kill.

I worked with a man that has hunted squirrels for near 60 years with a single 12 ga. with #4 shot.He never considered it over kill ,he always took plenty of game and never saw need of any other gun.

Hunter, I almost always use a 12 ga for hunting squirrels because of safety concerns. I would rather use a .22 cal rifle but too many people live too close to me. Also, a quick little grey squirrel is hard to get a follow-up shot on. What kind of squirrels are you shooting? Here in Indiana I shoot low brass 6's with a follow-up of high brass 6's early in the year. For late season I "beef" up to 5's due to distance and thicker hide. Good luck and good eating. Flatcoat

I like the .22mag for these guys. You don't have to worry about spitting pellets and it sucks the guts right out of them. I am guessing it will do the same thing in Wa. Check the Wa DNR web page and look for some public hunting areas. Squirrel are usually easy to find. - but some locations that are heavily hunting will hold NONE. Seems people jut blast them everytime they see one.
