Hi, I very new to the sport of Hunting Deer .
I see these TV host / hunters using a powder in a squeezie bottle thingie, to see where the wind is going.
What the heck is it & where do ya get some?

Wind indicators are great for detecting the direction that the wind is blowing. In the early morning or late afternoon, when the wind has laid down, or when you're in a canyon or heavy forest, it is often diffcult to tell which way your scent is going. There are several types. Windicator is an odorless talc spray and Wind Tracker is a fiber material similar to cottonwood silk.
The fibers are particularly good for treestand hunting, since you can see it drifting for quite a distance. The powder works fine, but disipates fairly quickly.

I use Wind indicators mostly when i am trying to stalk up to game but sometimes use it when i am in my tree stand. I realy don't use mine that much, I usually just through up some fine dirt. When you run out of powder which will take a LONG time you can fill it back up with some realy fine grey ash from a fireplace.

Lick your finger and hold it staright up in the air. The side that dries first is the direction the wind is coming from. Save a few bucks and eliminate something that could clink in your pocket.

If you are hunting whitetail bullet selection is not critical. They are a thin skinned animal. Any brand of standard issue, off the shelves, will be enough. Just practice, put it in the boiler room, and you won't have any problems.
I like Federal products with premium bullets (Trophy Bonded or Swift A-Frame)but only because I usually hunt where you must be aware of other critters that can hunt you at the same time.
Shot placement is far more critical than bullet type, in this case.
Good luck!

In case you can't tell from my last post, I tend to be "old school". I totally agree with grayling. Congrats on the .308 Browning....fine gun in a fine caliber. Very shootable and more than adequate for deer. I have a .308 BLR. I think any standard factory load would work well. Try a few different kinds that are easily available, and see which one shoots best. For deer, I'd favor a 150 grain bullets over something heavier because of reduces recoil and flatter trajectory vs heavier bullets. The 4.5-14 scope will be OK, but most of your shoots will be <100yds if you hunt in eastern woods like me and I'd actually prefer a 2-7 or 3-9 power scope for a wider field of view and faster target aquisition. Make sure that you turn it down to 4.5 times before you walk into the woods.....there's nothing more fustrating than seeing a nice deer but not being able to find it in your scope because you've cranked the magnification up too high. Use the 14x for a well calculated once in a lifetime shot on some sort of shooting rest at a trophy deer 300yds away. Being a good (and ethical) hunter and a good shooter are often very different things.
Best of luck and enjoy the hunt as much as the kill!
