Does anyone use sway bars for towing a RV? Towing against a 30+ mph wind this last weekend was an adventure. I have a 2009 GMC Sierra and tow a 26' travel trailer with weight distribution hitch. Anyone have any recommendations?

I saw this post the other day and asked my neighbor your question. He’s got a similar set-up and said that he does have sway bars; which he installed himself after a few trips. He also said that the tow wasn’t bad originally, but that the bars did improve the trailers tracking. Hope this helps.

May look at everything all of the way down to your tires.

I tow a 28' 10,000lb toy trailer with a lifted truck with 35" tires. Over the summer I pulled it 4,400 miles over two weeks so I though it would be a good idea to put on my factory load range E tires for the trip for increased comfort mileage, power, etc. This turned out to be a big mistake making it a white knuckle ride much of the way as the OEM tires did not handle as well for towing. I imediately came home trying to add a sway sytem to correct the trouble, and found out that I would have to relocate my batteries or propane tanks to mount the swaybars. Then found that with my normal 35" E range tires I do not have this trouble when towing and are much more stable.

You may be on the right track with the sway bars but there are quite a few factors that change the towing charachteristics of each truck and trailer. You may try some of the truck and or RV forums as there are many guys on there that do this for a living and some that may have even been part of the design crew for ytour truck.

I like thedieselgarage.com the best but there are many good ones.

I have an 06 Ford 4x4 Supercrew and a 2009 25' trailer that I pull. Last year my sway bar ball was bent ( by the dealer in Puyallup Wa. South Hill RV it was improperly installed )and didn't THINK I needed it because I only towed it 200 miles to use it to live in for work. Well, let me tell you I decided to get it fixed and bring it home 300 miles. The winds were blowing I bet 30-40 mph. That trailer never got out of it's tracking behing my truck. Put the sway bars on. I truly believe they kept me from getting flipped over .....cheap investment.
