Hi, I am wondering about the process for changing the string on my bow. It's starting to show a little wear and I don't want to get slapped up-side my head.

How complicated is that? I know I'll need a bow press, but since I've never done it before, am a little ervous bout tackling the job.

Guess my main concern is the timeing adjustments that are needed once the new string is in place. What is involved, any special tools, and can an amateur handle the job?

Hey Travis,

Changing a bowstring isn't that hard, as long as you pay attention to what you're doing. If you're really unsure about your ability, just take a few photos of the bow and some closeups of the way the string attaches to the cams. I make photos of a lot of things I take apart, especially if I have to go get parts after the disassembly. It's too easy to get something all tore down and find out that the part has to be ordered. By the time it comes in I've forgotten how it went together, or my wife has "straightened" up my workbench and helped my by putting everything in a box. That's usually not a big deal, unless I've got two things taken apart at the same time, which happens pretty regularly. You don't really know what needs fixing until you take something apart, right? It makes sense to everyone except my wife who is a neatnick.

There are several different types of bow presses. I'd recommend getting one that you can use in the field. I had a problem on an elk hunt in Colorado that was fairly simple but it would have been a big pain without my field press. All you need to do is take the pressure off the limbs long enough to make the repairs and then release it slowly. Make sure that you watch closely to see that the string stays where its supposed to be as you release the tension. Timing is not a big deal either. You can find a lot of articles on how to do it on line, and probably your bow manufacturers web site too.

If you want to feel better about giving it a shot. Look up the information first. Really its a piece of cake. Get R done....
