I inherited a 1976 Leupold Vari X III. It was still in its original box with a receipt from Cabelas for $99.00 - shipping included. Does anyone know the difference between this Vari X III and the new Vari X III's. It is a very nice scope and in excellent condition, I was just curious how it compares with the newer scope's.

The Leupold Vari X III was an outstanding scope and the top of the line model for many years in the Leupold line. The current succesor model is actually called the VX III. Apparently, the lens coatings on the newer model are supposed to be even superior to the the Vari X line but this is probably more academic than anything else. I should mention that Leupold warranties their scopes for life, no matter who is the current owner. If there are any other mechanical differences in the newer line such as click adjustment dials which have been upgraded, Leupold will upgrade your scope for a nominal fee. As to newer lens coatings, this is an area that cannot be upgraded. Contact them at Leupold.Com. They are located near Portland, OR. If I were you, unless there is something wrong with your scope from a mechanical standpoint, I would use it as is, as it is one of the best scopes on the market.

The Vari-X III is optically the equivalent of the new VX-II with the multicoat-4 lens coatings. The new VX-III supposedly has index matched lens coatings that permit increased light transmission. We're talking maybe 2% more light transmission for the upgraded coatings.
I'll be happy to give you his money back (grin). Look on ebay and you'll see they're going for $300 typically. Even used, without the box.
If you have ANY use for it, mount it on a gun and put it to work. If not, contact me! The $100 is yours any time you're ready!

I have it mounted on a pre 64 Winchester .270. It is a wonderful scope and I will pass it down to my kids when I am retired from hunting!
