I don't have a three dot red dot but do have a multiplex scope on my crossbow and the same priciples should apply:
Sight in the top dot to be "dead on center" at 20 yds.
This should result in the arrow being within 1-2" of center (high) at distances <20yds
The second dot should be zero at about 30 yds, the bottom dot at about 40 yds.
The important thing is is to learn to jusge distances by sight and then know what the corrisponding dot you should use based on that distance.
Also, remember when judging distances, consider only the horizontal vector. This is very important when hunting from elevated tree stands. This is easily done by looking at trees around you when you are up in the stand........estimate distances to different tress while you are waiting for deer. That way, when the deer (or elk, moose, bear, whatever) comes in you will have a good idea how far away they are. This is real important when taking shots >20yds away.
