Morning and evening are the best if you are set up near a field or watering hole. Because they are the first and last places they stop before they roost. During the middle of the day they might just be roost, so your best bet is to sit up by some trees.

So in my experience, it depends on your hunting conditions.

I would definately try to go out during the week. You will have better hunting if you can take a day off during the week then go out when everyone else has it off during the weekends. I hate going out on opening days anywhere on public land, b/c there will always be a ton of people out.

I used to live in NC and they had the silly 12 noon rule as well. Opening day is over-rated anyway unless you are on private land.

Doves tend to stay on the roost longer when the ground is wet. I wouldn't make an effort to get in the field at the crack of dawn if the ground is really wet. Once the sun comes and and starts to dry everything out, they'll start flying.

Well managed to shoot 5 before work this morning at the brother-in-laws dads house right outside of town. Only shot for an hour, but didn't see a whole lot of birds. Hope to make it out first thing in the morning tomorrow with a couple buddies.

Hey Everyone, I'm new here.

I had a great hunt in Central Nebraska the last few days (Friday-Tuesday). I mainly hunted in the evenings near water. My totals were Friday 15, Saturday 15, Sunday 13, Monday 11, and Tuesday 7.

I was wondering what time of day you guys hunt feeding areas? I was thinking maybe in the mornings or early afternoon.

Welcome gar
as for me mid morning and mid afternoon is when i sit by the feeding areas. most of the time i dont
even bother just make myself get to my spot before 2 p.m. and sit there all day, by a ol oak tree.

Arizona has afternoon dove hunting for junior hunters only ! The kids have really good hunting, water and trees to roost in are the keys.
in Ca. as well as Arizona ,if a frontn(storm) comes thru the doves usally are pushed out except for the resident birds. Good hunting anyway! If it was me I would go anyway because a lousy day hunting still beats a good day at home.

Good morning all,
I was palnning on going hunting this afternoon (Virginias noon hunting time is crazy, but as of Oct 6th the time changes to sunrise to sunset) it has been raining this morning and is suppose to be on and off thunderstorms this afternoon. Has anyone ever hunted dove in the rain? Or does anyone know if it would be a waste of time to try to hunt in the rain?

Have been out twice so far this year, but only got one dove. I am hunting on 600 acres of farm land (corn and soy beans) so its hard to cover the field and keep them flying. But I do the best I can ;-)

Thanks all, Hunting Virginia

In my experience, doves don't like rain. They just sit somewhere until it's over. If it is a cold rain, a lot of them head for warmer, dryer places. Wish you were closer, I'd be glad to come out and help you keep them flying!

Good Luck!

Well I went out anyway. The rain stopped for about 4 hours and the dove were few and far between, but at least they were out there. Took some shots, but the were flying alittle to good yesterday ;-) I guess I will have to try again next weekend.

depends on the kind of rain, I have had good hunts on opening day in a steady drizzle and but in heavy rain you have to walk the tree lines and jump them out of the trees.
