Hi all you hunters out there! Does anybody know a good hunting place around the Mojave Desert in California? Near Big Bear, or Arrowhead, or Wrightwood, or N35 W117?
I've heard of some places, but I forgot them... Can you guys help? Its my second year with a hunting license and I've never gone for big game! Thanx.

I am in roughly the same boat as you. I have hunted deer in Arkansas. We have a deer cabin there in the Ozarks. I am new to Deer and Bear hunting in California.

I have not even tried to hunt here in California yet. I have Reconed some spots in the San Gorgornio Wilderness (south of Big Bear) via Google Earth and Topos. I read hunting guide websites for the area. I also spoke to a friend of mine who hikes the area a lot.

With all that desk work I have enough information to start a real scouting exercise. I know a spot that holds dear and bear. I know the access roads and trails to reach the area. I know the average number of human visitors per month.

I plan to do two or three hikes this summer and fall. I probably won't even hunt this year. I just want to get a good recon of the area.

In 2008 I plan to make my first real effort to hunt the area.

Please keep me updated on your findings. Between the two of us we can probably get a good idea of the area.

Check out the publication at this link:

you will need to have adobe acrobat reader installed to view the document. It's available at:

I live in Montana but have done work on the Southern California national forests and there are some decent mule deer there. I'm not familiar with the regulations but recommend checking them before planning a hunt.
Good luck!
