I was thinking of getting a rifle or carbine for the trunk of my car and found the Ruger PC4 in 40 sw to peak my interest. Does anyone have one of these and what do you think about a pistiol chambering in a carbine style rifle? I think that the 40 sw would have plenty of stuff out of a 16 inch barrel to handle the occational raccoon quill pig or ferrel cat at a good distance while still having enough incase I run into bigger varmits.

I had the opportunity to shoot these carbines at a law enforcement demo day a couple of years ago. All shooting was done with iron sights only.
In my opinion they were ok, but nothing to get excited about, in either the 40 or 9mm. I agree that the 40 caliber round would have sufficient power for your listed purposes, but the predictable accuracy for the smaller targets would wane as the range increased. It is possible an optical sight/scope might increase it's effective range.
