The last couple years i go out to my brother in laws dads land a few miles out of town. There is a fence row with corn on one side and pasture on the other. We hunt on the corn side, usually just duck down or sit next to the little pond that is right next to the fence. They fly over to land at the pond, fly over just to fly over, or fly over to sit in the alpha field just north of the corn. Last year we had to best luck if we were walk, with walking along the edge of the corn and alpha. The doves would be sitting 2-4 rows into the corn, and its like flushing pheasants, kinda fun.
But we have other locations that are public that we hunt by just walking around in the trees till we find a place they like to roost then sit and wait for them to fly by.
In nebraska it is always blowing, so these guys are never an easy shot with the wind behind their back.
oh yeah i shoot my Benelli nova i picked up last year. Dove season is nice b/c you are able to get a couple guys together sit around and shoot the breeze. Since you usually get so many shots, the girls like to go out when we dove hunt too. Gotta love $3.00 shells a box too, better than the $10-$15 steel shot for later in the year.
Good luck, I can't wait.

I like to scope out where all the marijuana patches are first. Doves just love marijuana seeds. We will walk from one to the next and catch them feeding. Just tear them up.

Yeah finding the "ditch weed" plants are always a plus, especially when they are right below or around big trees. I haven't been able to hunt under such conditions for about 3 years. But when we did it was a blast.

You know we hunt a nice field that will be bush hogged just right before the season starts. the dove love to fly out into that field and being that there are only 5 of us that hunt the field. we all usually have a nice meal afterwards along with some beer and good conversations on who missed and who was the man that day. I LOVE HUNTING it dont matter what kind of hunting we do. On what i shoot , a Beretta 390 silver mallard with 71/2 shoot also. Im like you Brent you cant beat those 3.00$ a box shells. A good inexpensive way to have fun with friends and not bust your wallet. Well good hunting and good luck this year you guys.

That is why I called it ditch weed, it looks like the real thing, but it ain't. Leaves look the same but it ain't the illegal plant.

Nebraska is the only state that you can not hunt Sandhill Cranes in. There are sooooo many of these guys that come to south central NE during the spring and fall. Any migration map you look at they all cycle together to this region.
I had an old baseball coach that shot one down in Kansas and had it stuffed and it sits in his living room, its kinda hilarious since he has to keep the taxidermy info on it so that they know it was killed and mounted in Kansas not Nebraska.

I have several landowner friends that put out 3-4 acre sunflower plots every year. If you mow a few strips in them and spray them with glyphosate when mature to kill all weeds and give the dove bare ground to land on you can kill a limit of 15 in 30-45 mins in late afternoon or early evening. Take them to the house and clean them and grill em with several beers. I take the 12 ga BPS and the cheapest shells I can find.

I hunted over several ponds, near corn and milo, on my inlaws land. Kansas is a great dove state. I just can't believe I didn't hunt them sooner, last fall was the first time for me. I took my son some and went with my hunting buddy other times. This is great fun, fast action, and easy to do. It doesn't take long to hop out to a pond and spend a couple of hours. I can't wait until Sept.

I live in MO. My uncle owns 500+ acres of farm and cattle land. He combines corn fields a week prior to dove season opening. The first week of season is a BLAST. Doves will come in droves to a combined corn field, especially if there is timber near by. There is usually 5 or 6 of us and we each shoot a limit every day for the 1st week. If the start to spook we'll put out a couple Mojo Doves. Those really work.

MO season starts Sept 1 and goes until Nov 9. I usually hunt most weekends and some week nights if I have time after work. I only go to the MOJO Dove if the birds are spooking easily. It really brings them in. I've been hunting birds all over the country for about 10 years now.

I like the marijuana too but I hate the seeds.

If you have never dove hunted in Yuma, Arizona along the Colorado River, you haven't yet experienced dove hunting at it's best. There are so many birds on opening day, that you can easily limit out in the first hour of the day. Better shooters than I try to limit out, on a box of shells. I do too much "flock shooting" to ever be able to do that. I have a number of shotguns that I like, but the Benelli is my favorite for dove and quail. 71/2's are all you need (lots and lots of em:)
It is truly a blast, if you ever get a chance.
Happy/safe hunting guys,
Kyle

I don't think it's legal to hunt sandhill cranes here in NC. I may be wrong, but I've never heard of it here.
