I've been to Minnesota quite a bit and love that state. I'm looking at a few parcels of land there and was wondering how the deer hunting is in the northeastern part of the state?

Thanks for the advice.

What city is the land by?

They're spread out across the northern part of the state. One is near Duluth/Grand Rapids, another on the western side... Probably won't go ahead with the plan until next year, but giving it some serious thought.

I used to hunt North of Deer River which is just West of Grand Rapids. Hunting was tough but the woods were great.

Minnesota is split between rifle and shotgun only areas. If that is important to you you might want to check where the land falls on the split.

That's the truth. Hunting is tough but you won't find better woods. The farm country in the central is a nice mix of woods and fields and generaly holds more deer. Taste a little better too. You can either get on a fresh set of tracks in the snow and follow them until you find the tracklayer. Or get em movin with an old fashioned drive. If you got a little Indian in you, you'll know where they are and you can stalk em. Tough hunting for sure up there. Bring some company!

Chinook,
Got any tips on finding the tracklayer? I've done some of this in the snow in Eastern Ontario and all I ever found was tracks! I've heard that some of the big boys will stop once every so often to see what may be following them but I've never been able to connect. I've glassed the woods ahead, moved in quiet, slow sprints (can you sprint quietly and slowly?). Any tips on lining one of these guys up?
Got my doe tag! Thanx for any info.

I hunt south central Minnesota, corn country. Hunt fields and food plots most of the time here.

Sure Madawaska, If you can find fresh tracks and stay on them you will find the owner. A lot of times someone pushed them out and you will notice the tracks curving. You can cut them off by taking a shortcut. They are just going back to where they got pushed out of in the first place. Too, if they curve toward a lake your deer is circling back and has to funnel between the lake and you so it's better to cut em off at the pass. Problem is they don't want to move much during the day so ya have to stir em up.

I've taken deer near Skunk Lake about 10 miles north of Park Rapids. Good bear and grouse woods too.

I hunt the Bemidji area. We don't see a lot of huge bucks but there are lots of deer. Great hunting!!

Guys from work hunt up by Thief River Falls and Bemidji, they never fail to bring home venison.

Don't know about the Northeast side though.
